Troy Boston (formerly Albany St Hotel) | 275 Albany Street | South End

I actually like the effect this building has from the SE Expressway. It works with the new construction in Chinatown to really extend the city core. The fact that it blocks MT makes it more dramatic when it springs up out of nowhere. Not a huge fan of the building itself but I don't find the...

Images for some of the proposals that apparently the city originally didn't want to show. Looks...

What impresses me the most isn't the drilling but picking up the wreckage afterwards to clean up the mess. The machines look like they are moving slow but they are actually being incredibly efficient - so much so that I'm having a hard time getting good video of it as they move too quick. The...

About a month ago when I was filming stuff on the site I talked to a superintendent who told me the whole project would take about four months. I'm unsure if he meant from that date (May 21) or the entire demolition, which had been underway for few weeks at this point. My guess is this means...

It's happening too fast, I wanted to document as much as the process as I possibly could, but every time I go down there I feel like I've missed something interesting. On the plus side, every trip yields new and interesting pictures/video, so I never feel I'm wasting my time.

Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

There are tons of these one story buildings along Mass Ave that can use improvement, but I hate the idea of displacing a bunch of functioning businesses that currently occupy the space ala Miso.

Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

That's one of the nicer looking one story retail buildings on Mass Ave, surrounded by two of the worst - the horrid aluminum siding thing with Rite Aid/Hwd Express/Simons and the Changsho mostly for the surface lot. Hwd Express is going out of business and there doesn't seem to be many other...

Assembly Square Infill and Small Developments | Somerville

Honestly, I think this is because construction is seen as mundane and taken for granted as opposed to police or firefighting work, where the danger is more "sexy". Think about it, how many pulsating dramas do we have on TV about builders? It's backwards when you think in terms of actual...

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part VIII (2015)

Yeah but once we stick the 1'000 footer on Volpe... it will look even more like a midsize sunbelt city!

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

In addition to Beacon Hill and the Financial District, a couple other good examples are the Trinity Church reflected in the Hancock Tower and the Old State House surrounded by large downtown skyscrapers. There was some discussion here recently about what defines Boston architecturally - what...

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

This is something I always thought about. I didn't start paying attention to architecture in Boston till about 2010 - I lived out of the area prior to that. I used to think a bunch of buildings constructed in the early part of the millennia had just always been there, at least since the 80's or...

Novartis Campus | 181-211 Mass Ave, 22 Windsor Street | Kendall Square | Cambridge

I'll reserve final judgement till it's finished but I don't like the stone work nearly as much as I thought I would. The steel beams really interrupt the visual patterns. Will be curious to see how this interacts with the street when the scaffolding comes down.

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

I've never been entirely sure that top room out front with all the windows was even a unit. It has the look of an common atrium, which makes sense seeing how visible it is from the street - the windows don't seem to have any covering leading to zero privacy. In terms of who lives there, I don't...

Well it's all the same block of misery but at least the parking lots have an actual sidewalk not displaced from construction, forcing me inches from traffic. Also the fact that it's next to that annoying ped crossing which gives you no shade to wait in. Yeah it just sucks all around to see this...
