Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part IV (2011)

Holy crap, those views from Chelsea are amazing! Here's what I managed to get of the "super moon" on Saturday night.

    Boston & Cambridge - 1950's

Long exposure times required? This is the 1950s, not the 1850s! The fading man inside South Station is clearly just suffering a Back to the Future kind of effect.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part IV (2011)

Love those Mt. Auburn shots! It's the bottom of the line Canon from a few years ago. Rebel XTi I think. And usually whatever cheap lens came with it. Those snow pictures have some contrasty Photoshop stuff going on of course, and at least one is some sort of HDR.

Thanks! Yeah, all from a Cambridge-Beacon Hill-Back Bay "stroll" the other day.

Looking for an accurate land map

I don't have one on hand but think I know how to make one. What sort of extent are you looking for?

    How Walkable Is Your Neighborhood?

They give some details on the ranking methodology here: http://www.walkscore.com/rankings/ranking-methodology.shtml Basically they sample a bunch of grid cells and weight each one's score by the population at that cell (based on Census blocks). So it sounds like large unpopulated areas...

    How Walkable Is Your Neighborhood?

Wow, that article was really published just a few days ago? Walk Score's neighborhood rankings and maps have been available for a couple of years now. The only thing that counts in their calculation is the density of certain amenities, parks being just one item on the list. The Common, etc. are...

These shots didn't turn out too well for a couple of reasons, but... From the Dorchester Heights Monument yesterday:

    Biking in Boston

This reminds me of the opposite type of sign, seen on Inman Street in Cambridge: "If you can read this you're biking the wrong way."

    Harvard - Allston Campus

Awesome, thanks for the info. I don't mind those triple deckers and that is indeed a pretty great story if true. And now that it's finished the park is pretty nice, but it's good to know the story behind all this. What is annoying?and I know I sound like an obnoxious suburbanite here?is that...

    Harvard - Allston Campus

Do you happen to have any links about that proposal and the events that transpired? I live just around the corner (within the aerial snippet you posted) but moved here right around when they started to work on the park. I'm curious about the story behind all this new Harvard stuff.

    Aerials

"Unwelcoming" is perhaps an apt word for MIT, but only partly because of the difficulty of passing through. To me, a Cambridge resident who has nothing to do with MIT, the campus is a huge dead zone occupying a great location. Because I almost never have reason to be at MIT, from my perspective...

Educate everyone on a good website...

Awesome, thanks. I searched and searched for any kind of aerial photo or plan but came up short. Somehow I missed that photo. re Monument Square... I should have posed some questions here first, because you guys can set me straight on some things. I'm going for the spot in JP that seems to be...

Educate everyone on a good website...

As the author of that and regular lurker here, just wanted to say I'm glad to see it posted here! I'm still waiting for somebody to call me out for using an out-of-date map of Maverick Square. I took a ride over there to check out the redesign but was too lazy to sketch it and turn it into a...

    Boston Skyline Photos

Nope, Thursday... and this was more of a roll-down-the-car-window sort of shot. The guy with the tripod probably has a better photo to show for it!
