A car-free town in rural Maine?

Insane concept for this day and age, and in my opinion and based upon observation, impossible without proper transportation to surrounding areas.

    Manchester Infill & Small Developments

It may never be very urban, but ultimately it is part of the city, and the building did not necessarily stand out as ugly, but I do not remember what it looked like. So it definable needs improvement to stand out more. That rendering looks good.

I was driving by an saw that the Amoskeag Inn (I think I have this right) is being renovated, at least on the outside, and it does look significant. I don't know much, or know much of the place, but I think prior to this, it looked fairly old and just didn't have a modern look to it.

    Manchester Infill & Small Developments

I do not see how any could be against this. I think it will do a lot for the area. The problem that development in general has is building on lots of forest and field in suburban towns. I like to see developers pushing to have places renovated and abandoned lots used like Anagnost. Much MUCH...

    Manchester's West Side

There is literally a Dunkin Donuts 300 feet away, about a 1 minute walk away. I really do not think a Dunkin Donuts is needed there. And man, you are right about it being worse than the liquor store. At least that people had to get out of their cars.

    Downtown Manchester rail loop proposal

But many will disagree on this concept, and argue that the flexibility and freedom of their private car is priceless. (I am not one who would argue with you Pat. I could live without a car, kinda, it would be hard, I would be mroe likely to own a car and just almost never use it. It is hard to...

    Downtown Manchester rail loop proposal

Very true. Price is definitely an issue. However mentioned in the article is the thought of reducing traffic, to do this, it would need to be transportation oriented versus sightseeing. Doesn't San Fransisco still have trolley's over something more modern? Or maybe they did and upgraded them...

    Downtown Manchester rail loop proposal

Segways are cool though, kind of have their own personality. A bit geeky I guess. I would much rather prefer a historically accurate trolley over some tacky touristy train, but would MUCH rather prefer a modern up to date practical streetcar train over a historically accurate trolley...

    Downtown Manchester rail loop proposal

To comment on the shuttle, I think I said this before (which seems like common sense to me) when you have a shuttle wrapped in brown and gray historical graphics, although cool, people miss it. If you have a flashy red, yellow, blue, white and green bus, people will use it. Marketing, bus stops...

    Downtown Manchester rail loop proposal

The rail things is cool to hear about. However, it seems to be like it is more focused towards attracting people to ride it as an attraction versus practicality. Which I have mixed feelings about. Manchester which is an ok city, doesn't necessarily have anything that people will come to the city...

The Elliot at River's Edge - Manchester, NH

It is cool to see the park's design drawn up. Looks nice. However I am disappointing in how long it is taking to get the park creation underway. It seems like they used that as another incentive to get the city to approve it, then once underway the park is on the end of the list of priorities...

    UMass Lowell

I see with the campuses there being three. Kinda weird IMO since non are so big. The other two across the Merrimack River seems smaller than the one near the rail. However together they look bigger. I am surprised you think the city is so "gritty." Personally I think the city is quite nice in...

    UMass Lowell

Lowell has come a long way recently. I do not find myself there that often because there is no direct route from my town to Lowell, but it is nice. Many newly converted buildings to now very nice apartments and condos. The Lowell line, if ever extended to NH, will bring more ridership to the...

    Manchester Infill & Small Developments

Thanks. That is good to hear. Anyone seen anything on or heard anything on Mill West Apartments. I think these are as important if not more important. Maybe I shouldn't say important, but I think Mill West will have a large impact on the area, especially if they are higher-end...

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

I hear ya about the chain stores. They have the stability, but don't add much character to the local area. However, they are part of our society now, and I think a good balance is fine. But the balance tends to be broken when these big chains run out the more unique and in my opinion better...

    Oak Street

Parking requirements are weird. But, at least this place is doing something that most developers do not, ground floor parking rather than parking behind. Much better use of land. Goes to show that all of the single level paved parking lots could serve more than just parking if they simply build...

    Commuter Rail to New Hampshire?

Haha, kinda gone way off topic. But all interesting. The problem with Plaistow (aside from money) was that the town wanted the layover station on the boarder near Atkinson, yet Atkinson didn't "want it in their back yard." They were worried of too much pollution. I am surprised that the...

75mph Speed Limit for northern Maine.

Oh, and this would be true. Until everyone is driving more gas efficient cars.
