I'm Ok with eliminating those parking spaces. We're agreed! Let them use trains. I respect your opinion but I refuse to equate 'density' with 'damaging'. Cities are dense for all kinds of good solid economic and cultural reasons. Managing density is a challenge, but in and of itself it is...

I was about to hit the button to say something similar -- so I'll second this. i was thinking of the public garden -- very close to the Arlington end. as I've mentioned before I spent many years living on beacon hill. my experience says that the garden and the common are rarely used heavily...

    Efficiency in the Chinese Economy

Probably a good idea to move the thread. but not a bad conversation, imho. the inefficiencies are of scale first and foremost. outside the state sector for most of the past century there was virtually no commerce at scale -- including in the agricultural sectors. remember the aircraft, auto...

    Harvard - Allston Campus

in case it hasn't already been noted, Harvard Magazine has two interesting articles this month. one on the politics of what gets built -- and why it hasn't been considered very good lately. the other is about some of the great examples of modernist houses in New England (the Glass House, etc.)...

    Efficiency in the Chinese Economy

Not at all. Always good to hear your take. This is very true. It speaks to the massive inefficiencies of the Chinese market even more than to the sometimes stunningly dense cities. The inefficiencies keep goods cheap, margins miniscule and quality sometimes non-existent. I guess we should...

thanks, i think, for the seductive part. you saying things about unrealistic is the pot calling the kettle black... :-) i'm not a huge fan of advocating for development on parking lots first, or otherwise treating individual landowners as if they were just dipping their choice of meat out of...

consider it primarily a vote of no confidence in the new stuff coming in. and, wouldn't it be nice to see a layered street scape that pulled back and up from something as intimate, laid back and main street as what this row was a few years back. wasn't "cute" as much as coffee, shave, bar...

if the 1-story row in these pictures is going away i'll be sad to see it go. would have been nice to see it incorporated. with the trees and small shops that was one of the nicest stretches of the area.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style - Part Deux

i wouldn't defend this little area from any kind of development -- but there are less used "front yards" in the downtown. biggest problem is the way the building hangs over. A couple story building would fit, but wouldn't be worth the effort for the land owner.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style - Part Deux

depends on what you call wasted. this area is/was pretty heavily used by bank employees (i was one 10 years ago) during lunch and coffee breaks. the entire area (and more?) below the driveway and plaza is a cafeteria--or was in 97. the glass that sticks out from the building goes over an...

Radian (Dainty Dot) | 120 Kingston Street | Chinatown

the focus on how historic the specific building is goes the wrong way. don't know if that building is historic, but it is a quality structure that helps define a historically / culturally / socially interesting neighborhood. trade height for frontage.

    Two Financial Center

very true. oddly, some of the best face the east welcoming cross street neighbors -- one financial and the south station backend / bus station and the market / car park. can't remember what's across from the steam plant, but I'd bet that bookend is also not bad.
