Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport kz, I don't think that's office space now--I think it's still a home. About 8 years ago I represented a couple that bought that "house." It's huge. It consists of the a big chunk of the top floor of the original building, plus the house-like structure...

I like the cladding. Vaguely reminds me of the sandstone and brick used in the Dainty Dot, and of canyon walls.

    BU Development Thread

Totally agree--some colored panels, new windows, patched concrete and maybe a little kill-it-with-fire, and it will look great. To be clear, I hope BU is very careful in how it treats the original architectural design, lest they end up actually leaving this building standing.

    Continuum | Barry's Corner | Allston

Re: Barry's Corner Commons and renaming Barry's Corner I'd argue if Samuels and Harvard are successful here, you'll hardly notice the buildings for the streetscape. When I think of Harvard Square, I rarely think of distinguished architecture, though arguably there is some here and there. How...

One Greenway (Parcel 24) | 0 Kneeland Street | Chinatown

This is looking nice. The panels have a bit of a sedimentary canyon wall effect, which seems entirely appropriate here. I can't recall previously seeing a building where windows are already going in while steel is still going up--it looks like the panels are about to overtake the fireproofing.

I just wish the different modes could interact more smoothly like in this example: http://vimeo.com/106226560

    Biking in Boston

kjdonovan, very well said. In particular I think you're on to something about why car drivers go completely mental. I think cars give drivers a false sense of being in control, which is continually thwarted by traffic and the behavior of other road users. That breeds frustration and rage. The...

New England Conservatory Residence Hall | St. Botolph St. | Back Bay

I enjoyed the video, and generally like the design, but I continue to be surprised at how many architects are employing the staggered, varying size windows, and while I'm at it, the monumental cornice frames as is being used on Jacob Wirth and so many other buildings--these elements often go...

Hook Wharf | 400 Atlantic Ave | Downtown

The schematic above suggests something has changed, and that they're planning for two way traffic. See also my post in the McCourt parcels thread--this should be a trolley and pedestrian bridge!

    Seaport Transportation

Re: Seaport Square (Formerly McCourt Seaport Parcels) Here's my suggestion for improved rail connections, which I think I posted a few years back. Electric, battery powered street trolley running from Blackfan across the old Northern Ave bridge, up Atlantic (eating up some of the James Hook...

Hook Wharf | 400 Atlantic Ave | Downtown

Opening the bridge to vehicle traffic is a lousy idea. Think about what it would do to traffic on Atlantic Ave--presumably a light would be necessary, all of 150 feet further north from the preceding light. And this would be yet another intersection for pedestrians to cross. Lastly, having a...

^Yes. That picture has me confused, because it looks like masonry, but it's not vaulted.

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Is the ceiling in those renderings the exposed brick or clay tile that's visible in some of the renovation pictures a few pages back?

Ferdinand Building Renovation + Addition | Dudley Sq | Roxbury

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated I totally agree with this. The design integrates the old and new well, but in this case I think what really makes this work is that the quality of construction and materials for the old and new is on par. They didn't glue beautiful...

Ferdinand Building Renovation + Addition | Dudley Sq | Roxbury

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated I love this building. I can't decide whether it's a good thing or a bad thing that this will be the administration building for the Boston Public Schools. Pro: city is investing in great design and quality construction; Con: how...

Deck The Pike Herald St. Extension

I think DaveM's plan is excellent. Also, the value of some of these lots wouldn't be limited to the return of a 4-6 story condo building with a narrow footprint; rather, many of the lots, particularly on the South side, could be combined with existing, underutilized lots for larger projects.

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Is the plan to move Helmand and Boco Loco into the new building, and then knock down the current locations? The party walls above look like placeholders until the rest of the building is completed. Also, isn't that stonework going up in panels?
