Commuter Rail in NY/NJ and MBTA are the outliers in the US. They both are much more expensive than say Chicago for similar distance traveled. Chicago Metra is about 50% of the cost of Boston area commuter rail and suburban parking is about 50% cheaper too. I think Commuter rail in San...

My commute from zone 3 commuter rail will be $19 per day round trip ($15 fare $4 parking). This is for a trip of approximately 12 miles as my station is very near rte 128. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate, but this just seems intolerably expensive for a short train commute

So Charlie Baker's henchmen, aka the fiscal control board, decide to opt for the higher fare option. The control board disregards the legislative intent of the recently passed law that fares shall not go up by more than 5% every two years. I hope the legislature cures the ambiguous language...

    Why is Chicago so affordable?

It seems they more easily add supply to every category of housing, whether it be apartments, housing subdivisions, or high rises in the city. Suburban development occurs on a scale not seen here, large tracts of farmland are developed into subdivisions with hundreds, if not thousands, single...

Raffles Boston (40 Trinity Place) | 426 Stuart Street | Back Bay

Fair enough, maybe fabric is not the appropriate word for this site, but I do not like the incremental erosion of Boston's pre war building stock for lackluster replacements. It is the continual, albeit slow, march to architectural mediocrity that brings Boston gradually closer and closer to...

Raffles Boston (40 Trinity Place) | 426 Stuart Street | Back Bay

^ Agreed, I'm all for development, more density, etc., but Boston should not squander it's best long term competitive advantage - it's historic urban fabric. Another reflective glass box doesn't cut it.

    Downtown skyline around 1980

The federal reserve building may be attractive viewed by some in isolation, but a slew of large warehouse buildings were cleared to assemble that massive parcel. The tower only occupies a portion of the property. I'm speculating, but I wouldn't be surprised if that tower has less square footage...

General Electric HQ (Necco Buildings Reno) | 5 Necco Street | Fort Point

Re: General Electric HQ | TBD | Innovation District Fairfield and Connecticut probably could have done nothing to head this off, it's about being in an urban area with access to highly educated Talent and reinventing their image. My hometown of Omaha just lost a major fortune 500 agribusiness...

Avalon North Station | Nashua Street Residences | West End

I think aesthetics matter to a lot of people, in the older suburbs around Boston, particular neighborhoods, streets and even homes that have that certain "curb appeal" always seem to be in higher demand from buyers. There are so many people who will pay a significant mark up for a prewar...

Carmel, California -- aka Hobbiton USA

I viewed these beautiful pictures while stuck on the Framingham Commuter Rail as it puttered inbound during the morning rush hour at very slow speed due to "track work." The severe delays were made significantly worse by the fact that I happened to pick the only open seat on the train with the...

    kz's random cities pics

A lot of people do seem to be pleasantly surprised. However, I often think it may be the case, at least in part, because expectations are low. It is Nebraska after all. Lincoln has always had a fairly nice downtown since it is home to the flagship state univ. and the state capital. Also the...

Glad to see you made it to Lincoln, NE, where I spent my undergrad years at the Univ. of Neb. and I'm guessing you probably drove through my hometown of Omaha which is about an hour east on the highway from Lincoln. Great pics and congrats on touring all over the country!

Before my time, but here is a link below from a member of this forum who used to post updates on his blog. Neisner's was an L shaped department store with two entrances, one on Washington and the other on Bromfield. Not sure if it is one or two buildings though... Interestingly the facade on...

    11-21 Bromfield Street | DTX | Downtown

Re: One Bromfield (28-story DTX tower) | 1 Bromfield Street | Downtown ^ This site plan would make for very interesting scale, with so much of a better outcome than what will likely happen, which will be consolidating all the parcels except for maybe the sam lagrassas building.

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

Re: The Boston Garden (TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End BCDC rejection - shocking; I figured design review was dead, dead, dead in this city given projects such as the building that replaced the home for the little wanderers or repeated inattention to activation of the ground...
