General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I know the Healey campaign has been pretty light on specifics, but are there any ideas of who would (or should) be picked for Sec. of Transportation? Jim Aloisi again?

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

You’re right, on second thought I might be recalling the idea of using CX as a staging area. Maybe they could use a lot in Brickbottom. Since the name of the last study was ”NSRL reassessment“ maybe they’ll call this one the “rereassessment”.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

$1 million for NSRL design study in latest transportation bond bill. Anyone know what this study would uncover that previous studies haven’t? Or is it just a chance to un-sandbag the previous study? I’m pretty sure the last study proposed the Northside portal to be where Cambridge Crossing is...

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

I did this, there’s nothing at the Encore side to indicate that the path is closed where the path starts and I wasn’t inclined to double back. The footing is a bit treacherous but it still felt safer and faster than crossing the Revere Beach Parkway.

    The New Retail Thread

A new theater for the Seaport: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will open in former ShowPlace Movie fanatics, rejoice: A snazzy cinema will take over the former home of the ShowPlace Icon Theater in the Seaport District starting early 2023. That’s when Austin-based chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema plans...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I’m really not following what about the Union Square to Lechmere service precludes them working on the tunnel? Are they loading their equipment into a construction car at Union Square and riding it back and forth to GC?

Don't forget the B Branch is also closed until July 1st.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Any ideas why GLX service is ending at Lechmere instead of North Station? The last time they shut down service for the Haymarket garage the shuttle busses began at North Station, much more convenient for commuter rail transfers.

Union Square Somerville Infill and Small Developments

I heard from an employee that after the move they are turning their old place into a wine bar, very excited.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Is a Shore Line East extension to Providence possible or planned? It would be great for the gap between MBTA and SLE to be closed. I imagine it would enable a cheaper Boston > NYC option than the Northeast Regional.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

I imagine an air rights project would be immensely easier and cheaper if completed while the highway and tracks beneath it are also under construction right?

    Grounding the McGrath

The resurfacing has been planned for a while, well before the infrastructure bill. I live about 200 feet from the overpass, so you won’t find a bigger advocate for the grounding to just start already. However, it’s been clear for a while the project won’t commence until 2026 or later. They...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Does anyone know if the train protection system will improve signaling well enough to reduce headways or eliminate some stop signs on grade separated parts of the system? There are several on the GLX and I think two in the portal between Science Park and North Station. It would be so much more...

I agree, I’m sure that is what they’re doing. I was just making the point that bird safe design probably should be a consideration in new projects. Everything I’ve seen points to the glass being the problem rather than accent lighting, so it’s not a justification to remove it.

Referencing this article: https://www.businessinsider.com/bird-safe-glass-windows-arnold-glas-ornilux-2020-7 ”the city's Javits Center, which was renovated with bird-safe glass in 2015, and has now reduced collisions by 90%.” It’s not saving “a few extra birds a year”, it’s nearly eliminating...

An episode of the podcast 99% Invisible aired just last week about the consideration of bird strikes in architecture: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/99-invisible/id394775318?i=1000556348774 To summarize, there are some effective design considerations that can be made that can almost...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

What are the laws around accessible emergency evacuation points? It’s obviously not a requirement for buildings. Is it required for transit stations? Is the T going above and beyond here, or just covering for themselves if both elevators break on the same day?
