Report: Celtics to look into building new arena

The cities you are citing have real metro systems, ones that actually move millions of people. Boston does not.

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Keolis first announced fare gate plans in March 2017, which certainly means SOMEBODY was talking about it before then. https://commonwealthbeacon.org/transportation/keolis-plans-to-put-up-fare-gates-at-3-stations/

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Tell me through two photographs that no one thought about future fare gates when planning the new Bus Terminal/South Station interface.

Report: Celtics to look into building new arena

I was not saying Everett is better than Back Bay for handling an Arena crowd. I was saying an MLS arena is less stress than an NBA arena, because of the shorter schedule. Also the Celtics rarely play just a regular season. They have been in the playoffs 62 times.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

This is last year's reporting. The MTA itself does not report out deaths in its safety reporting -- it take some investigative digging. The last major dig into this was NYT reporting in 2007 which was not pretty (238 worker deaths on tracks over 61 years - which is almost 4 per year)...

The St Regis Residences (former Whiskey Priest site) | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

Some of the units need serious repricing. Because of design mistakes the usable square footage versus listed square footage is much lower in the St. Regis versus Millennium or Winthrop. Also the developer overpriced the units facing away from the water -- there should be a discount for facing...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

The NY MTA's history with single track operation, maintenance, is that it is pretty deadly for workers. Recent years (since 2000) about one worker per year is killed doing maintenance. 2 were killed last year. Prior to 2000 it was even less safe (more than 200 killed between 1946 and 2000).

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

The old train sets have fully depleted their use life, are very expensive to maintain and are basically white elephant trains. No one in their right mind wants to try to run them.

Report: Celtics to look into building new arena

Everett Soccer Stadium will be a mess on game days -- 17 per year (home games for MLS). NBA plays 41 home games in the regular season plus extended playoffs -- and NBA overlaps MLB so there would be simultaneous games at the Hynes and Fenway locations. It's worse.

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Does anyone know exactly how many fares it takes on a bus to pay for the Cubic infrastructure on a single bus? This is not "one and done" infrastructure; every Cubic device (tap point) has an ongoing service charge for its availability for use, plus a transaction fee on every fare.

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Free transit is expanding in Europe. Luxembourg has had free transit for almost 5 years. Belgrade recently implemented it. Capitals in the Baltic States have free transit. But you also have to build more transit and offer frequency of service. Maybe through congestion pricing on cars? Right...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Your point about the two additional headhouses is a good one. Recreating those would be perfect for adding elevators. The cost element is you have to create a second access to fare control with gates and fare vending for those access points (more money for low utilization equipment).

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Rather depends on what else you are doing, where else you are going before going to the station. Cell service is bad in most of Westchester County (they don't want visible cell towers).

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

OK, This is sort of better. The one-way mobile tickets auto activating is an issue. Many stations on Metro-North have poor cell coverage for some carriers (looking at you AT&T) -- you cannot reliably buy a mobile ticket while at the station -- so I often buy in advance when on Wi-Fi. Now you...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

OK, someone explain this to me in plain English. What are Metro North or LIRR "day passes that expire four hours after being activated"? Expensive one-way tickets? When did a "day" become 4 hours long?

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I honestly think it is a money issue. It is a complex project where you have to find a suitable way to get elevator access to both platforms, separately, while maintaining the historic integrity of the two head houses (historic landmarks). Past experience with elevators into these old stations...

    The New Retail Thread

Shoplifting gets a lot of the buzz on social media about retail closure, but shrinkage actually covers much more than shoplifting -- it is any source of lost inventory. The National Retail Federation says that 65% of shrinkage is employee theft, less than 30% is shoplifting (the rest is...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Fourth and subsequent offenses should be impound the vehicle and driver loses their license. At that point you have proven you are a sociopathic scofflaw.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Doesn't there have to be east-bound, west-bound phasing to keep the roadways open during construction? Isn't that a given for the project?

Report: Celtics to look into building new arena

Not to mention that the Hynes location is a much poorer transit access location than North Station. Imaging the cluster on the Green Line if there was a game at both Fenway and the Hynes location 😱
