    Reasonable Transit Pitches

Let's start with Charlie Cards that work everywhere on the T.

    Transit history/trivia quiz

Even some of the Amtrak platforms at Union Station DC are still low boarding -- I had the displeasure of encountering one on a Regional trip back to NYC a couple years ago.

    Congestion toll in Boston?

But projects like BLX are also about getting people into Boston (people who likely drive today).

    Congestion toll in Boston?

OK that part works, but how do people near but outside the congestion zone get to the Pike? First entrance outside the zone is Allston/Cambridge. Also it is not really hyper efficient using the Pike as a boundary -- you still have to put gantries on every road that CROSSES the Pike (or any...

    Congestion toll in Boston?

I do think we need to ask ourselves what we are trying to accomplish -- specifically with the boundaries. And what are the unforeseen consequences? The maps using the Mass Pike and similar high volume arteries as boundaries basically say you cannot get out of the South End or Longwood headed...

    Tobin Bridge Relocation/Replacement

The tunnels your are throwing the Tobin traffic onto are already full. I live on the North Shore -- during the Sumner Tunnel rehab (taking just 2 inbound lanes out of service, there were times when you simply could not get to Boston (or even Logan from the north). You need to add transit...

    Tobin Bridge Relocation/Replacement

You are suggesting eliminating 6 lanes of Harbor crossing capacity (Tobin) and routing that traffic into 4 lanes of Harbor crossing, the Williams Tunnel, that is already full. The Williams Tunnel already backs up so much in peak travel times that Logan Airport access from the north (1a) is...

West End Library | 151 Cambridge Street | West End

I get your point about the proximity to Beacon Hill, but have you taken a serious architectural look at the buildings on the south side of Cambridge Street? They are not exactly gems. You need to move at least a block up the hill to get to consistently decent (historic) architecture.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

The "AI" hook makes for a clickbait headline. That is all the media care about now.

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

If you are referring to the draw mechanism, yes I agree -- seems it is a rare (in the US) Dutch-style bascule bridge where all the draw mechanism (machinery room, counter weight) is overhead to protect the mechanicals from flooding. Design was selected to protect the crossing from climate...

Suffolk Downs Redevelopment | East Boston/Revere

It is always sunny and summer, with flowers in bloom and trees in full leaf, in real estate renderings.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Actually I don't believe they are leaving much on the table in terms of height. The current tower required the FAA to "look the other way" a bit as it encroaches into the precipitous drop in allowable (insurable) height at the south edge of downtown.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Also, IIRC, a big part of the track expansion is tied up with the Gateway Tunnel project (and its many starts, stops, recasts, etc.) (as well as other Manhattan real estate boondoggles south of the station). The two systems have to come together to make it all work.

    Lynn infill and small developments

I don't think the ROW up Revere Beach through Point of Pines is wide enough for a busway? The Lynn Revere Beach rail was narrow gauge (it was double tracked though). It also has at least one major encumbrance that need to be fixed.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I guess my impression of the older gates was that they did not seem that overcrowded. The terminal never felt as crowed as Port Authority, for example (yes that facility can be subhuman). But I also never use busses at peak travel time periods.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Does anyone know why the new gates are so much lower spatial density than the old gates? Seems they are giving each gate much more space in the new section, resulting in fewer potential gates.

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

In this type of system, how do they implement stations? Do they span the entire road to get access from both sides? How does that access play with sidewalks, bike lanes, travel lanes, etc. ? (The access has to land somewhere.) Really curious because I think elevated running could work for BLX...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

For a small value infraction like not paying a T fare, small nudges like the presence of a Fare Inspector is often enough to drive compliance. Saving $2.40 is not enough to warrant the risk of engagement with a visible fare inspector. Increase in fare compliance is a much better measure of...

It is so wild how this demolition project looks more like a construction project.

Lyra (née The Huntington) | 252/258/264 Huntington Avenue | Fenway

    I. M. Pei might have disagreed with you on that point. The Symphony Towers were executed pretty much to the original Pei masterplan for the site.
