Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

The New Bedford Light ran an article yesterday (March 23, 2026) to mark the one year anniversary of the opening of South Coast Rail. Fair use quotes from the start of the article:

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

The Sagamore Bridge sees considerably higher traffic counts than the Bourne -- hence the focus of getting Sagamore done first. Source: https://www.capecodcommission.org/our-work/traffic-counts/

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

As noted in the MBTA Construction Projects thread, major construction work is slated to start soon on the renovation of Back Bay station. Has the MBTA announced where the commuter rail fare gates will be set up?

And there's no timeline in place yet to replace the Bourne Bridge. Double ouch.

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

MassDOT's January 20th "Recreation Open House" presentation now shows a date of 2037 for completion of the new Sagamore bridges. I also see the CapeFLYER Bourne station will be relocated closer to the Gallo Ice Arena to accommodate the new Bourne bridges.

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Not a frequent commuter rail user anymore, so I didn't understand the design differences between North and South stations fare gates until cden pointed them out. WTF. Of course the South Station arrangement will not work. Passengers (quite reasonably) want to wait in a climate controlled...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

New Bedford Light December 18 article. Signs suggest South Coast Rail is boosting tourism, development The extension has brought more visitors, and it seems to be attracting more developers to build here. "...As 2026 approaches, the MBTA’s Fall River/New Bedford Line is about to enter its 10th...

One Harbor Shore Dr. | Fan Pier Parcel H | 1 Harbor Shore Drive | Seaport

For some reason this building reminds me of Ideal's Super City building sets of the late 1960s. Not a criticism--I like the look. This brings back happy childhood memories of my Super City set.

    MassDOT News Updates

Huh. I got the the exact opposite impression reading the CommonWealth Beacon article, most notably from these paragraphs: It sounds like Eng has been building a very competent management team. Coholan, for one, is very competent and diligent. I have been aware of his career progression...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

It's interesting the 2024 ADB show a dip in June and July, while the 2025 data, not so much. I would expect a summer dip, with universities largely out of session and summer vacations. I'm curious what drove the 2025 average daily boardings to reflect much less seasonal variation.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Buzzards Bay isn't a town (it's a village in the town of Bourne), but its development was largely due to the railroad. The Cape Cod Branch Railroad between Middleboro and Sandwich crossed Cohasset Narrows here in 1848. At the time, there only a handful of buildings here, and the Sandwich glass...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

This would be at the Cape side of the Bourne Bridge, by the rotary, likely organized by the United Cape Patriots, an ultra right-wing group. That has been their favorite public perch for years. While southern Plymouth County and the Cape does tend to run more conservative, the Patriots group...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

"Not enough bang for the buck to make it financially feasible at the time" aptly describes why a direct rail route was not completed directly connecting Providence, Fall River, New Bedford and the Cape. Regarding Fall River, the 1875 Slade's Ferry bridge over the Taunton River did provide a...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

The federal government looked at this at the time they purchased the canal in the late 1920s. The feds knew the canal needed to be widened from its then 100-foot canal. They went high-level with the two 1930s highway bridges, but quickly realized a movable span would be required for rail. A...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

What should be a reasonable proposal: A seasonal Providence - Hyannis service in the spirit of today's Boston - Hyannis CapeFLYER service. Connecting with Amtrak and MBTA commuter rail at Providence station, the train would follow the Northeast Corridor to Attleboro, where it would turn onto...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

This past Tuesday the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Transportation held a public hearing on several pending bills this session, including House Bill 3654 and Senate Bill 2394, both titled “An Act relative to restoring commuter rail to Cape Cod” . The Senate bill is a watered down version of...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

SCR phase 2 is nowhere on the state's radar. There's no organized group advocating for it. Don't expect the state to be protecting the potential right-of-way for this route, sadly. At least the Quincy-Dorchester Old Colony main bottleneck has received a slight bit of state attention. That...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Spot checking a handful of New Haven Railroad employee timetables from the 1940s into the mid 1950s, it becomes obvious the top speed on the Berkshire line was 50 m.p.h. back in the "good old days." That, with 41 to 42 permanent speed restrictions along the route between S.S. 44 in South...

    General Cape Cod Discussion

Sorry I missed this post a month ago. While Old King's Highway (Route 6A) is a busy road with bicyclists and pedestrians, the speed limit is as high as 45 m.p.h. in many sections, including Sandwich and Barnstable. Meanwhile, the CapeFLYER is restricted to 30 m.p.h. on the Cape, including long...
