    UMass Amherst Developments

There has been a lot of new construction in the past decade. The new buildings are very nice and have transformed a lot of previously empty or bleak areas of campus. Integrated Science Building Physical Sciences Building Life Science Lab Olver Design Building Studio Arts...

    UMass Amherst Developments

I have a bunch of photos of UMass that I've collected over the past year or so. First some aerial shots from the top of the library. The first one shows the two construction project currently in progress: a new student union with some extensive landscape work (foreground) and the new Worcestor...

Looks like there was some minimum scale, vaguely measured in "anticipation", required to make the list. Couple of my favorites from this year (Pier 4, Whitney Hotel) are smaller and probably not nominated for that reason. And I'm not sure how the Sudbury still being u/c is going to impact the...

    Children's Hospital Building | Longwood

Of course. Not suggesting that we prioritize occasional, unexpected views over the needs of the populace. Just taking a moment to appreciate the silver lining in what's there now.

    AB Google Earth Guessing Game

^ The MacAllen Building? True, but there's quite a lot going on over there already. And I'm still clinging to the slim hope that we might someday see an extension of Fort Point Channel and some sliver of the South Bay restored in all the under-developed land.

    Children's Hospital Building | Longwood

Perhaps, but they create a wonderful layered effect juxtaposed with the mid-rise towers in 02124's photo above. Maybe it's the rain, or the curve of the street drawing the eye up and around the bend, but there's something almost fanciful about that picture. You lose some of the potential for...

Gables Seaport (née Waterside Place 1B) | 505 Congress Street | Seaport

I can't make up my mind on this. On the one hand it does feel irretrievably shoddy. But on the other hand the contrast is so striking I can't help but like it anyway. I especially like the view from this angle (from Friday):

I like it. Architecture isn't as important as cityscape, especially for a building this size.... the context, the continuity of the street wall, the sense of place, that all matters a lot. This may not be great architecture but it's gorgeous cityscape.

Wow, those 1966 and 1974 proposals are truly horrifying.

Marine Wharf (Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites) | 660 Summer St | Seaport

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before.... But is there a plan to add a third wing to this building in the future? I can't imagine any other reason why the core has those door/elevator holes punched into the exposed side.

    XenForo Update

I think what it does is take you to the first unread post in the thread. If there have been no new postings since you last looked at the thread (and thus no unread post) it dumps you on page 1. At least that's what I've observed.

Columbus Center: RIP | Back Bay

Re the Mass Pike Towers.... Here are 2 incarnations of that concept that I've had stashed away on my HD for decades, like you said.... The one on the left is dated 2005, the one on the right is even older.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XII (2019)

Thanks, yeah, something like that. I just assumed it was some kind of surveying equipment. Was surprised to see them all out there on a Saturday. We were there for a college tour today for my daughter, who's interested in the bio engineering program.

I was wondering the same thing. I guess because "...the 10th longest such run in any of the country's largest 40 cities" kind of undermined their point. It's terribly inconvenient when the facts don't support your argument.

NEMA Boston | 399 Congress St. | Seaport

You know, every time I see this building I think how much better the panels look in person than in photos. They really look like crap in most photos (including mine here), but in person they do a reasonably good job at pretending to be slate or something else much nicer.
