Tallest Buildings Out of the Ground and Growing

Cambridge city dump in the 1970s, looking north across the Fitchburg Div rail line toward the Jefferson Park housing project. Photo from John Sullivan. My family and I lived in the rightmost brick building in Jefferson Park from 1954 to1966, next to the cemetery. The local kids would set...

Looks like your prediction, at least for the removal of the highway overpass, might be accurate.

Museum Of Science Renovations | 1 Science Park | West End

That's not true. Huge additions were built in the 60s and 70s. The tower part of the museum and the garage were added in the late 60s, and right after that the museum buildings were expanded and extended toward the new garage.

Museum Of Science Renovations | 1 Science Park | West End

Thank you for the great info. I was going to the Boston Museum of Science by the time I was 12 (1962), including the Charles Hayden Planetarium which opened in 1958 per the Wikipedia article. I loved Spooky the owl and the interactive presentations they had with him. I went to the museum and...

From the article: "As with the Allston highway project, Bowker Overpass, McGrath Highway and countless other hack jobs, safety, climate change and community wishes are secondary to increasing vehicle throughput at any cost." The traffic models will almost always show the need for multi-lane...

    Proposed watertown ferry

Good points. I don't think the new Watertown ferry will be financially viable. If it charges fares high enough to make a profit, then those high fares will repel commuters.

    Proposed watertown ferry

The Watertown Ferry will likely be cheaper than the $30 ticket for the tourist boat tours, and will go all the way to Watertown.

Here's the lane width table from MassDOT's Project Development and Design Guide. It's adapted from the AASHTO Green Book. I'm leaning towards 12' lanes for Eastern Ave because of the heavy truck traffic, plus no center turn lane (under the scenario with protected bike lanes on both sides).

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I don't see how transit can be self sufficient. Roadways, cars and trucks certainly aren't.

Great point. I looked up the AASHTO guidance on lane width, and I found this verbiage via AI: "AASHTO guidance, primarily from "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets" (the "Green Book"), recommends 12-foot (3.6 m) lanes as the standard for high-speed, high-volume, and...

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

I agree that bike lanes should be on major streets. On Google Earth, in the western part of the project I measure a width of about 56 ft for the existing Eastern Ave right-of-way (ROW) width, including the existing sidewalks. So, with two 12 ft lanes for vehicular traffic, that leaves 16'...

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

Since the Northern Strand Community Trail runs closely parallel to it and the street is narrow, probably no bike lanes are warranted given the constrained width available. I'd say just go with 1 lane of traffic each way, with no center turn lane, and no on-street parking. This would allow...
