    General Portland Discussion

I believe the lot had a Dunkin' Donuts? And I was told that prostitutes would sit down and talk with the cops in there and both sides were copasetic. The State Theatre across the street featured X-rated movies. It was kind of Portland's "Combat Zone" or named after Boston's near the theatre...

    General Portland Discussion

So much for the lighter colored stones instead of brick. But if they add enough varying greenery it might turn into something nice. The Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston is a good source for inspiration. I'd like to see the Bayside Trail from Plowman Street to Elm inspired by some of that. So far...

Tallest building in town, can you name the city?

I don't think that people are flocking to Kalamazoo, or are they? A tourist hotspot? Does it have an airport with passenger traffic like Portland's, or a dynamic coastal port? Who really wants to go to Kalamazoo for a visit or fun weekend? I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, "Hey, let's go...

Portland Music Hall | Cumberland Avenue

A new 800 capacity venue/club opens up in the warehouse-like space ($3.5 million renovation) across from Roux and WEX tomorrow night. This will help. And speaking of Sabrina Carpenter, it's not such a remote chance that she could perform here in Portland. Amy Allen, who used to perform small...

Portland Music Hall | Cumberland Avenue

I didn't know it was that bad. I've worked with some notable music acts and if the green room and dressing rooms are too small or blah, they won't come, or again. Some will use their tour bus. Cross Insurance Arena has this problem too. Many Mainers think that all you have to do is offer them a...

Portland Music Hall | Cumberland Avenue

It's probably best that this does get approved despite the outcry. I went to Brit Floyd (The Pink Floyd cover band from England) at the Merrill last night and it was an incredible show. We sat in the upper balcony, and the laser light show component was spectacular to see from up there. But it's...

Portland Foreside | 58 Fore Street | Portland

The change is going to be enticements for wealthy out-of-state second home buyers. They will keep their place in Manhattan but then do a 40/60 living split to avoid the increased taxes. I've spent a lot of time over the last few months looking at home prices and availabilities in southern Maine...

Roux Institute Campus Development | Portland

This thing is turning into a beast. Apparently, on the north side it's 8 floors high? I like the views. How could you not? And what's with the parking garage facade? Something artistic going up? The marina and public space will be impressive. And then there is the renovation of the 5-story...

View Boston (Observatory) | Prudential Tower | Back Bay

Like many restaurants that close, it's primarily due to poor management. View restaurants at this height become a bit boring after a while but then good food and selections, service, etc. do not. If this were a Gordon Ramsay restaurant and bar, it would thrive. (I remember going to the Hyatt...

89 Elm Street | Port Properties Bayside Phase 1A | Portland

Avesta supplies sorely needed affordable housing for Portland (89 Elm) and now the city is aiming to kill larger-scaled projects like this one by pulling its non-profit status. The city talks out of both sides of its mouth. They want more affordable housing, but then create more taxes, fees...

    Portland Bayside

My vote would be to do this with the existing Bayside Trail, to develop it further with inspiration pulled from The High Line in midtown Manhattan. It's the most dynamic urban public and green space that I've ever experienced, and that includes the wonderful Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

I don't know about this. Remember when the Press Hotel did their little pocket park on the street? It didn't really work. The above concept illustration appears only half thought-out. I do think the upcoming new addition should be revised. It should or could be bolder and more modern and perhaps...

Seaport - new (unnamed) hotel gets approval

I had some friends from CA visiting and so put them up at the Aloft here last September. This area is quite dynamic. The lawn on D (change that name please) across is an almost unbelievable and safe space to play, etc. when you have kids. It's also a short and fun walk from here into the Seaport...

For the 255 apartments... The developer... https://cathartes.com/ The arch firm... https://www.embarcdesign.com/project/thompsons-point Although I wouldn't call the views "breathtaking" at a tidal pool in between the Jetport and 295. The design, etc. looks a bit generic and perhaps a notch...

    Thompson's Point, Portland

Great news! With this new hotel and the residential build, the area becomes an even greater magnet. It's why the train station should remain across the street. NNEPRA's argument that it adds "30 minutes" to the ride to Freeport and Brunswick is spurious. It adds 15 minutes, with a round trip...
