    Transit history/trivia quiz

Some research based guesses: 2: Talbot Ave coming out of Ashmont, and Huntington Ave between Francis St and S. Huntington? 4.1: 66 along North Harvard St? 10.2: Assembly I should have gotten even without looking, Woodland and Ball Sq I'm less bothered by. 10.4: Riverside 10.5: Orient Heights and...

    General Infrastructure

Not quite what it says. Broadly the argument is as follows: Neither the MBTA nor the roads currently have enough capacity for local demand, therefore traffic. If you want to 'fix traffic' then your options are as follows: Massive highway projects that bulldoze neighborhoods and cost loads...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

NYC made it work for the SBS validation machines, and Toronto has Presto tap points at every (I think) GO station. There is nothing exceptional about New England weather than precludes their use.

    TheRatmeister's transit, and urbanism diaries

Just a show-off post, here's my transit card collection going into 2026. I'm hoping to expand it quite a bit this year, I have a week long trip to Turkey planned where I should be able to get 5-6 more. Seattle Boston Porto London Paris Chicago NYC (RIP Metrocard) Also Porto Netherlands...

    Fantasy T maps

As far as I can tell there was never a streetcar route operating the section of the 109 between Harvard and Union Sq, that has always been a bus route since it was created in the early 1920s. I'm not actually sure why though, it doesn't seem especially hilly or narrow.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I've seen some recent plans for street designs downtown that have the BNRD Silver Line service as this, not the 'dog-leg' that was given. Here's the relevant section of my updated map.

Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

My understanding is whenever you see this kind of back-to-back announcement of routes it's often a 'defensive' measure on the part of the second airline. The fact that Delta moved second would support that, they're trying to protect their emerging hub in Boston by ensuring that customers...

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

If you can get to Needham Center, which might only add one extra grade separation, then I can get behind that. But I'm not sure that was ever the hard part, getting across the wetlands was. How much of a concern is yard space with a longer OL extension? For Roslindale Sq obviously it's a...

    Morrissey Boulevard Redesign

An MBTA which, for many south shore commuters, is already faster than driving.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Previously the pattern has been a single weekend for inspections and then a longer shutdown the month after.

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

This is the big problem. Forest Hills has a huge bus handling facility, it's right next to the Arborway garage, and it's well situated for transfers between buses on multiple corridors. This is not a coincidence, it's been designed for this for literally more than 100 years. No OLX station can...

Perhaps it just caught some lawmaker's fancy or something.

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

It's long but also, where are 34E riders going? I'd bet a good deal are going to LMA in which case no, truncating at Roslindale Sq is not a good idea.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Meeting notes from the 12/17 Mattapan Line Meeting: Overview: There were a lot of big-wigs here tonight, including several execs and assistants. Sam Zhou is the most prominent name. The project had a rejiggering corresponding with leadership changes at the MBTA Parts of the project are...

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

But also don't expect routes like 34[E] or 40 to get cut back to Roslindale Square. Forest Hills is designed as a bus/subway interchange first and foremost and those connections to routes like the 31 and 39 cannot (easily) be made elsewhere, and building a transfer of similar quality at...

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

The challenge is containing the knock-on effects. If you extend the OL past Roslindale Sq then you need to end Needham Line service, which means extending the OL at least to West Roxbury. But then you have to decide what to do with Needham? Do you leave a light-rail shuttle, do you extend the...

    TheRatmeister's transit, and urbanism diaries

Hexagonal trains in Copenhagen The DSB logo is a hexagon, so the regional trains in Copenhagen are too. They have a hilariously wide loading gauge and as a result have very spacious interiors though. Art in Tiles (Berlin) I started the Metro Photography thread because I think art in transit...

    TheRatmeister's transit, and urbanism diaries

I travel a lot (arguably too much) and so I have a lot of random observations about transit and urbanism from various places, mostly Europe for now. This first batch is almost all transit-related but I'll post more things as I think of them while going through photos or encounter them out in the...
