City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

I'm not sure what it makes you, but whether or not we like a certain type of architecture shouldn't dictate whether something is built. Going to your specific point about the American Revolution, very little of Boston's built environment is as old as that. Yes, some of it is close to City Hall...

    Massachusetts 2026 Congressional elections

He's not wrong about age concerns (not just for Markey, but for most of the Senate). I like the idea of a younger, but ideologically compatible candidate taking up the reins. But Markey needs to step down and endorse somebody. I don't really think a fight between him and somebody like Moulton is...

City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

Riffing on @JumboBuc's point, I'd argue, for example, that the BPL is a far more important civic building. But I'd also argue that how people feel about the aesthetics is not an indication of success or failure.

    Tobin Bridge Relocation/Replacement

The approach used in Los Angeles for the 6th Street viaduct would likely be feasible.

    Tobin Bridge Relocation/Replacement

I used to bike commute to an office in East Boston a few times a month, and I always wished for such an option. I didn't mind the more round about route via Everett and Chelsea, but if there had been a Tobin option, I'd have gladly traded the 5 miles for some climbing.

City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

I realize it may have come off that way, but what I really meant was that a lot of the hate is not based on any kind of serious study of the building.

City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

A lot of people just don't understand what they are looking at, or haven't really looked at the building in the first place. There are reasonable critiques, by all means, but much of the hate is just thoughtless bandwagon reactions. Count me with @Scott on this!

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Because everything in this country is based on an us vs them mentality, and we lack the ability to form a consensus on any public goods.

So let me get this straight: The MBTA is told to make things safer or lose money Brightline is given a bunch of money to make things safer I wonder what is different about these two scenarios. No, I don't.

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

I would really like to see something that incorporates the facade of the power station. I've argued before that the tallest smoke stack would be cool to preserve, too, but I guess it's kind of in the way of the stadium footprint. But the river facing wall of the building should be compatible...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I like that building. What I find gross are the large surface lots surrounding it.

That is nearly $100 million per mile, over mostly open land without any utilities or obstacles. As far as I'm aware, their plan is to go over the mountains, rather than any tunneling. And with only four stations and a maintenance facility, how can it possibly be as expensive as that?

Another unchangeable feature of that walk is that it involves a substantial amount of hill climbing. You have to be pretty fit and into walking/hiking to see that walk as anything other than problematic at best. I mean, I'll do it next time I'm in L.A. and catch a game there, but I think there...

Looks like you're right, that the raised walkway is part of phase 2. I had the right idea about where phase 2 would be, but didn't realize that was the wetland section, which I thought was between the tracks and Arborough Road, closer to the train station. Here's what it looks like right...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

I think Provincetown and Hyannis are both reasonable places for a car free visit. The issue is whether the train or ferry serve people well if they have other destinations. I'd say only in the way that @millerm277 suggest is it serving the rest of the Cape. And I've done both options with a...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

If I'm not mistaken, it's not possible to ignore speed limits and blow through stop lights on the heavy rail lines, whereas the Green Line has no automatic limiter system built in.

I'm also skeptical, but I think Phase 2, if that's really what was promised, is just the segment that would connect the Arboretum Road path with the Bussey/South entrance. The section from there, which involves the raised decking above the wetland to the end point by the train station is Phase...

Yeah, it's not perfect, people would need to get to the game early, but it would still be an upgrade over the current shuttle bus system. The buses get badly stuck in traffic, especially post game. Last time I was at Dodger Stadium, I waited well over an hour for a bus, which then took 45...
