    Redesign the Urban Ring

The 1965/1975 general plan for the City of Boston and regional core, published in 1965, does include radial transit extensions, but does not include anything on circumferential transit.

    Redesign the Urban Ring

I followed transit developments like a hawk when I was a kid and a teenager in the 1950s and 60s, and I don't recall seeing any proposals or ideas floated publicly regarding circumferential transit. Also, I'm thinking there probably weren't any in the 1930s because of the Great Depression, and...

Kendall Common ( née Volpe Redevelopment) | Kendall Sq | Cambridge

Would love to see them do something similar to the Hurley building, 1-2-3 Center Plaza building, and the low-rise portion of the JFK Federal office building.

    Biking in Boston

So they haven't applied for funding yet, so a B/C ratio type of analysis needs to be done. I've reviewed these for projects before, and they're pretty basic, just assigning monetary values to the various benefits provided by the project, plus adding up the costs.

    Biking in Boston

If the project applies for Federal funds, then a benefit/cost ratio needs to be calculated. But aside from that, I know of no reason to do an economic feasibility study for this type of project. Economic feasibility is not a purpose and need for the project; it's irrelevant. Sure, you always...

    Somerville Infill and Small Developments

It is still a free country. If they don't want to sell their house, that's completely up to them. It's not like eminent domain for a highway or transit project.

One Harbor Shore Dr. | Fan Pier Parcel H | 1 Harbor Shore Drive | Seaport

I hope the mech wall turns out as good as the rest of the building.

    Winchester Infill and Small Developments

Yes, but it is in the downtown of a city inside a large metro area. A 6 story building shouldn't be a shock to the system. Hell, there was a 6 story apartment building in my neighborhood - North Cambridge - when. I was a kid in the 1950s, while every other building in that entire part of town...

North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

That link is really informative. Thanks! One thing that's unfortunate is the need to raise and modify the existing North Bank Pedestrian Bridge to accommodate the new track alignment. That pedestrian bridge was built just a few years ago, and it seems they could have anticipated this...

West End Library | 151 Cambridge Street | West End

I hate the horizontal offset to the right of the 3 upper floors away from the 2 story base. It just doesn't work here.

Tallest Buildings Out of the Ground and Growing

I don't blame the tall building slowdown on Wu. The US as a whole is in an economic slowdown and will be for awhile, IMO. Gathered online, here are some key economic indicators and trends (early 2026): GDP Growth: The 1.4% Q4 2025 growth was much slower than the 3% projected by economists...

    Redesign the Urban Ring

I agree about First Street not being wide enough for an elevated. However, much of that part of Cambridge from south of Mass Ave up to Lechmere Square is filled-in former swamp, so I don't know how feasible a subway would be. Engineering studies would obviously be needed to determine that.

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

It is so incredibly hard to get rid of urban expressways and freeways in the US. The state DOTs of course have a built-in bias towards highways, due to a century of their complete focus on roads (with transit and other modes only coming into focus the last few decades), and the deep seated...

    Redesign the Urban Ring

I like the idea shown on the first graphic of the Urban Ring on an easterly alignment along First Street, lining it up directly with the Kendall, Lechmere and Community College stations. My preference for this portion of the route would be elevated LRV.

Metropolitan Storage Warehouse Redevelopment/Renovation (MIT) | 134 Mass. Ave | Cambridge

I like the new windows' pattern overlapping the old windows' different pattern. To me it's MIT nerdy in a good way, an overlay of the modern over the old, a quantum physics kind of dynamic wherein two things can be in the same place at the same time; a science fiction-y vibe that fits MIT and...
