Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

To reduce solar gain. You can still get an angle view if you look out the window near the edges. I'd be more concerned with airborne pollutants/bits for cleaning purposes. And birds or bees. Looks like a great place to build a nest, on the other side. I've seen buildings in Florida use this...

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

Boston has 46 buildings taller than this Portland build proposal. Boston is x10 bigger in city and metro populations, but with tall buildings it's probably over 100 structures taller than Portland's tallest. So, in this regard it's currently x100 times bigger. The PPH should be posting...

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

Back when the 52 story Prudential Center in Boston's beautiful old Back Bay was built, perhaps it was the same kind of scenario or feeling. Its form kind of resembles the Old Port Square build. The Pru was or is not such a great looking tower, but getting rid of it would be like removing the...

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

It made the Daily Mail today... Now the story is literally all over the world. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15371879/Portland-Maine-skyscraper-eyesore-Old-Port-building.html

They chose the wrong image perspective to release to the public. It has The Casco rooftop at the horizon, and so this new tower stands well above it. I took the ferry back from Peaks this fall and The Casco dominates the skyline from this return line of sight. Here's a picture I took to...

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

There is a considerable amount of fury directed at this proposal build in the PPH comments section today. I'll bet nearly all of these people, after it gets built will visit the rooftop restaurant and bar and enjoy themselves with the stunning views. We need to point out that good or better...

Beautiful building. Looks stunning during a sunrise reflection from a 14th floor room at citizenM. It's almost worth a stay just for that. 👏

Disagree. That looks to be an office building next to a Romanesque styled church hundreds of years old. The Old Port has older buildings, but nothing too grand. The new Old Port Square Tower will have large windows for a two-floor restaurant and bar, etc., so at night with the lights on it will...

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

There has been substantial discussion on Instagram and X about this project. Most of it is positive. I pointed this out in a post... (the attached photos) as it too was perhaps once thought of as an ugly off-putting tower not fitting in with the surrounding area. But the locals got to like it...

GREAT perspective, cneal. You've already been on it. Interestingly, when I attended the NNEPRA meeting on the 20th, the director decried the extra 30 minutes added to get to Brunswick due to the train backing up. But that is not true, or a lie, because if you look at the schedule times, it's 30...

    Portland Passenger Rail

The distance from each outside lane edge going in either direction is a bit over 22 feet. A standard train car is 10 feet in width. I think the tracks going under the two bridges along the way might have to be lowered a bit (or maybe not) and the center bridge pillar moved to create perhaps one...

The Portland proposal station near Tyson Foods is dead. I got a message from the mayor of Saco today, who was at a meeting with the Portland city council about it. She said it's off the table now. Safety is a key issue, and Saco's station has had significant problems with that (I've witnessed it...

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

I kind of agree with this. I went back to LA to see what's up this past June and I still got the feel-good vibes, though it's not exactly the same. Santa Barbara and Ojai, you can always go there--immunity from the craziness.

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

Lever was handed the project from a little firm in Portland, OR. The little firm was selected by the PMA because of a certain "politically correct" architect. But this person in this tiny firm was overwhelmed as they were young and inexperienced (with only one average nothing special office...

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

The museum might be rethinking the project. They dumped the original little Portland, OR firm for one bigger and more prominent (Lever), and these land purchases could be used for more than surface parking. First, definitely raze the little franken structure with the A.I. generated mural on the...

    Portland Passenger Rail

Patrica was the emotional one about the pause. She kept griping about the 3o minutes needed to back up the train, and the cost, and the extra fumes. And then it was a few jabs for the city council. Cohen is measured and cool headed. He gave a summary in the beginning of the talk about the new...

I went. The proposal station for Portland is on hold. The city council is not liking this idea/location. NNEPRA's "leader" is not happy about it. I don't think it's going to happen. I'll know more next week.
