Housing (Supply Crisis & Public Policy)

Braintree, MA - 11 mi from downtown Boston - Station opened 1980 Vs. Wheaton-Glenmont, MD - 11 mi from downtown DC - Station opened 1990 (it's underneath the intersection) This is one example of two particularly analogous situations, but almost everywhere you look DC completely gaps Boston in...

    Newton Infill and Small Developments

Based on the pictures it appears that step-backs break up the street-facing facade into 5 separate parts, so its not like it is one massive 200ft long wall. More creative facade materials could probably help. I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment but from a practical perspective it...

Multi-Family Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

What is up with every person who discusses the housing market forgetting econ 101?

Right. Just as 6 stories is apparently "way too big" despite being right across the street from a 5-story office building...

    New England Electrical Grid

I'm not exactly an expert on this stuff, but I was under the impression commoditized solar + battery storage already exists at a per MWh cost lower than what any new nuclear can provide, while SMRs are theoretical and far from being proven to be more cost-effective than solar paired with battery...

Idea for fixing the housing shortage

Actually, your prediction was already correct. As of December, a revised version of the bill that has gone to the Senate Ways and Means committee for review has changed the parking minimum requirements from 0 per unit everywhere to 0 per unit just for 1) units within 0.5 miles of a transit...

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

Are there plans for that massive substation right by the new stadium to be covered/buried/relocated/removed?

Housing (Supply Crisis & Public Policy)

It's not as black and white as "fix" or "not fix". There are absolutely policies that would make the crisis less severe, even if it doesn't mean housing prices get cut in half or something. Incremental improvements still move the needle, and politicians should be pursuing them.

Commonwealth Pier Revitalization (née Seaport WTC)| 200 Seaport Boulevard | Seaport

I think it's kind of cool. The dark color w/ the variety of setbacks, heights, and angles make it almost look like the waves of the harbor. Something lighter would just blend in with the rest of the seaport high-rises.

Housing (Supply Crisis & Public Policy)

Agreed. Outside of an exhaustive, state-wide zoning/development plan (which, while politically untenable, seems like the most comprehensive way to solve this), what policies do you think could combat this trend? Only ones I can think of off the top of my head are: - Eliminate parking minimums...

Housing (Supply Crisis & Public Policy)

Why does it feel like almost every new initiative in this state to increase housing boils down to a new, roundabout way to throw money at the problem...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

How does this function as an alternative to OC double track? You're not eliminating any of the CR lines since you're not extending all the way down to Middleborough. And you can't even decrease the CR frequency on the Middleborough line that much. The capacity constraint on the single track...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Interested in revisiting this discussion. There was a lot of talk about RL taking over OCR lines being impossible due to grade crossings, rolling stock, freight needs, etc. but I didn't hear much that fully disqualified the idea. Assuming: - only extend RL to Greenbush and Kingston (no...

Multi-Family Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

I don't think the expectation was ever that these multi-family developments around more peripheral towns would ever be for true car-free living. But a car-light lifestyle has the opportunity to be very easy, especially in a location like this that is close to the heart of South Braintree retail...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Is there an impassable technical limitation to the orange line that would prevent it from having 2 minute peak frequencies? Presuming a project like this ever happened, there would also be the funds for signal, track, and rolling stock upgrades galore.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I can see the issue if it became a question of trade-offs between serving just Medford or Malden + north, but I was coming at it from the idea that there really doesn't even need to be a trade-off, because there's no world where anything more than half of a theoretical maximum capacity on a...

Housing (Supply Crisis & Public Policy)

Does anyone else worry about the amount of apartment-style housing built as car-oriented development? Stuff like NOBO in Saugus, etc. Not just from a "we need more TOD" perspective, but also because there are only so many people who are in the market for an apartment, whether rented or owned...
