Thinking on this a bit more, I feel like this building would have been more striking if it was half the depth. Split it down the middle between the silver and brown stripes. Keep the silver half. Discard the back half.

If the race was between Markey and someone younger with a similar policy profile, I think the generational change argument would play better. I also think it would be a closer race.
Maybe someone in the state government is regretting the past decision to annex the former towns to neighboring towns, instead of creating a single municipality for the reservoir and watershed.
Probably for similar reasons to why a slice of Somerville residents were livid about the city planning to close the Brown School and moving it to the new Winter Hill campus: they see anything east of Central Street as a different city.
