I think the T has plans to replace the catenary with third rail. I think it historically it was catenary because the MTA was afraid of third rail icing near the ocean, and they didn’t want to invest in third rail heaters.

I don’t think it can be replaced with normal ballasted track without substantially reworking the tunnels. The slabs need routine maintenance and eventual replacement. The T historically has been bad at routine maintenance. Replacement is not conducive to overnight work, due to the long cure...
