It's going to be kind of tricky to build the new bridge while leaving the old one in service. On the Boston side it should be fairly straightforward to tie the approach from the tunnel into the new bridge, maybe with a temporary section like they did with the I-93 Decks, but I can't see how...

For a project of this magnitude I'd expect nothing less.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I ride with my kids each morning from Ball Sq to Gilman Sq, and there's a huge number of high schoolers (like my older kid) who use the line to get to school. This morning a train arrived and we got on, only to have the driver announce that they were running express to East Somerville, so we got...

Blynman Canal Bridge Replacement | Gloucester

Pet peeve: I can see where some people might not know how to take a screenshot, particularly during a live presentation where they don't have time to look it up, but professional journalists have NO excuse for taking a fucking picture of the monitor.

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

Reactivating rail to Provincetown makes absolutely no sense. It's still going to take several hours to get there from Boston, while the fast ferry can do it in an hour and a half. And there will be basically zero demand for nine months of the year.

    Biking in Boston

I bike commuted on Beacon and Hampshire for several years. Pretty sure it's the busiest on-road bike route in the state. Those lanes will be a huge improvement, but I'm sure everyone who lives there will howl about the loss of parking, and not without some justification.

Off topic, but did Sound Bites change ownership? Last I knew it was still run by the famously irascible Yasser Mirza, of Ball Square Breakfast Wars fame.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

In the interest of gratuitous pedantry, it's "Gare Centrale" or "Central Station".

North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

At an semi-educated guess, I'd say that because of the existing height restrictions on the channel, there was no need for the unlimited vertical clearance of a bascule bridge, and a vertical lift bridge probably can be raised and lowered faster and might be cheaper to build.

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

MassDOT just announced the Massachusetts Priority Trails Network (map), which covers mostly familiar ground for rail trail nerds like me, but includes some genuine surprises. In particular, the highlighted "priority trails" include a) a connection between the northern and southern segments of...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I wonder if it would work better to have trains deadhead back to the North Station storage yard after dropping off, wait there as necessary, and then go back into NS on the outbound track to pick up passengers.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I ran into this a few weeks ago, when I was going to North Station to take the Orange Line outbound. The train stopped at Science Park, with another one ahead of it, and the driver told us to get on the train ahead and that it was leaving in 7 minutes. I got off and walked to North Station...

I took a spin down to the Cambridge Crossing REI yesterday. I'd poached nearly all of the path between Lowell St and Gilman Square at one point or another, but it was great to finally ride the whole thing. A few notes: I'm used to bike paths being flat, since they're usually repurposed railroad...

    Commuter Rail to New Hampshire?

Oh, rail service to Lincoln NH would be so nice (assuming it didn't take 4 hours, which is likely). Assuming the ski areas and Appalachian Mountain Club ran shuttles for skiers and hikers respectively, of course. (AMC does run a hiker shuttle that stops at the Lincoln bus station, but only twice...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Might have to tunnel anyway. River St doesn't look anywhere near wide enough for a dedicated reservation, and we all know how fond the T is of street running.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Xfinity Center is a fine venue in itself, but a nightmare to get to and a worse one to get out of. When I used to go to concerts there (back when it was still Great Woods), I found that the only way to avoid sitting in the traffic jam of everyone exiting for a full hour was to get over towards...
