City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

Architecture is a visual medium, though. Something can grow on you, sure, but I don't think it's legit to tell someone they "just don't get it" when they say it's ugly. On aesthetics alone, an architect who finds themselves being defended that way often is not a good architect.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

No, but people were shown renderings like this before: That's not from then Hines project and doesn't include tower, but people were being fed a modern station vision and didn't get it.

Union Square Somerville Infill and Small Developments

Somerville has substantially fewer lots available for large-scale dense residential. Each time they do a dense building, they do so by replacing an existing multifamily lot (most of the time). Much harder, much slower, probably a much better result.

AstraZeneca/Alexion MXD Tower | 290 Binney Street | Kendall Square

Right - I meant "back on the menu" in the sense that if they're doing detailed massing they must be getting close to the end for TF... And while 105 Broadway has its own thread - it seems like it would make zero sense to go to all of this trouble on that site in this market if they don't have a...

Latest MXD master plan update has this building's "twin" back on the menu, albeit with some shrinkage. https://www.cambridgema.gov/-/media/Files/CDD/ZoningDevel/SpecialPermits/sp315/Amend3/sp315_amend3appvol2_20250919.pdf

The winner looks pretty nice, FWIW. This is a great project regardless.

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

Per the article, no, but it would be the first that isn't airline-specific and is run by the airport itself, rather than by a private contractor for an airline.

    Brookline Infill and Small Developments

I could tell without looking that these were drawn by Jeff Speck. He has a signature style. The argument for "The Side Lot" would be the full activation of a larger plaza and the fact that the rear entrances to the existing buildings are actually entrances that could be improved, not dumpsters...

    Memorial Drive Greenway Phase III

I don't think it's at Interstate standards at all. I could be wrong. I think it's a legacy and if you mess with the number at all you'll need to reckon with it, but if you just designate a new Interstate from Bedford to Burlington it doesn't need to come up.

Vega (MXD Residential ) | 121 Broadway | Kendall Square

Well, yeah. Addresses are classy, especially when they include "Broadway" in them. Addresses also imply a substantial building in an urban setting while names like "Vega" imply a 5-on-1 cardboard box in Alewife or Everett. Using just the address communicates that the address alone should be...

    Memorial Drive Greenway Phase III

I've liked that idea too, but I think that NHDOT might need to rebuild the segment through Downtown Manchester if it were to become a 2-digit route, which they will not and should not do. Getting the Everett Turnpike to Interstate grade, on the other hand, is I think pretty much done or...

    Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

I wonder if this one is in a pretty unique spot, though, were O'Brien Highway is a commercial strip and no viewlines or streetwalls existed prior to the development of Cambridge Crossing. I don't think the highway viaduct look would play well down the middle of Comm Ave.

    Memorial Drive Greenway Phase III

Well now we're in the topic of another thread, but: - The freeway section of US-3 should be renumbered I-293 in coordination with NHDOT reclassifying the Everett Turnpike. - From Burlington to Nashua US-3 should be renumbered onto what is now MA-3A, continuing the New Hampshire arrangement. -...

    Memorial Drive Greenway Phase III

The question is what route and exit numbers are for. If they are meant to aid wayfinding and properly direct the flow of travel and commerce as it exists, then yes, they should follow the road people will typically take. If they are meant to be aspirational and direct the flow of traffic as it...

    Tobin Bridge Relocation/Replacement

To be fair to MassDOT, given that there's zero current prospect of LRT in Charlestown, no prospect prior to maybe 2050, and not even a conceptual proposal on the table, why would they future-proof for it? The plan that has been on the table is for Gold Line BRT on Congress to the Navy Yard, but...
