West Cambridge / Alewife Area Infill & Small Developments

Cambridge highlands is a name that's been around at least since WWII for this neighborhood. The development looks great, but $2.5 million plus per townhouse is painful. So much for affordable housing.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

You're right. There are still mega projects going on. I was thinking more of Boston in particular, regarding the lack of recent mega projects, although the new railroad lift bridge just starting construction at North Station is pretty impressive.

    General Boston Discussion

I like the fire-resistent aspect of steel framing. I grew up in an apartment building with no wood framing, and I'm happy it was that way. We never had to worry about the building burning down.

    Citgo Sign

It's glitzy, so it's a standout in a rather staid city.

    Somerville Infill and Small Developments

Narrow oddball streets like this are pretty common in neighborhoods of this vintage. These small streets were added onto the original street grid to provide access to residences added later in the backyards of the original houses.

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

The ramps could be mitigated to an extant by mounding parkland and paths over most of the ramp footprints. Here are some plan-view concepts I came up with several years ago (showing before and after for each ramp site):

    Platform screen doors.

Is it technically possible to put covers over the third rail just in the station areas, like the third rails are in the NYC subways?

North End Piazza on The Greenway | 198 Hanover Street | North End

This building is an outstanding example of the "shanty town" genre of architecture.

North End Piazza on The Greenway | 198 Hanover Street | North End

It looks makeshift and temporary. I'm hoping it will be.

    Platform screen doors.

Just stand a few feet back from the platform's edge, and it will be fine.

    Biking in Boston

In the new 2026 plan, the half-mile gap in the protected bike network on Blue Hill Ave through Mattapan Square is there to provide room for angled parking on both sides of the street (see plan below). Change that to parallel parking on both sides of the street, and there'd be room for bike lanes.

Copper Mill Development | Elm Street and Grove Street | Davis Square

Harvard Square already has high rises nearby (see below). Also, trying to keep a neighborhood (Harvard Sq or Davis Sq) just like it was 400 years ago is neither possible nor desirable.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

I don't know if any more infrastructure mega projects will be built in this country, on the scale of the Big Dig. It was budgeted at about $15 billion at the time, as I recall, and ended up more. Inflate that massive cost to today's dollars, and that would be impossible to fund. Also, the...

Copper Mill Development | Elm Street and Grove Street | Davis Square

Nobody on here is advocating for towers in a park, as in the Charles River Park complex. Also, I don't see how a few high rises in Harvard Sq, Porter Sq. or Davis Sq. would denigrate the special quality of those three areas. Kendall Square had no high rises historically, but it certainly does...

Lyra (née The Huntington) | 252/258/264 Huntington Avenue | Fenway

I basically like this building, but it is a bit reminiscent of a casino tower, a bit Vegas-y.

Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

The only gambling I've done is put $5 into the pot at the beginning of a poker game. Other than that, no gambling in my entire life.

Copper Mill Development | Elm Street and Grove Street | Davis Square

Agree, but there should be highrises in each of these three transportation hubs.

At least it doesn't look like a butter sculpture anymore.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Would the absence of bike lanes, and the installation of dedicated bus lanes, encourage bicyclists to (illegally) use the new bus lanes? I know that's what I would probably do, just to take my chances with the occasional bus rather than be mixed into the constant car/truck traffic.
