Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

But also don't expect routes like 34[E] or 40 to get cut back to Roslindale Square. Forest Hills is designed as a bus/subway interchange first and foremost and those connections to routes like the 31 and 39 cannot (easily) be made elsewhere, and building a transfer of similar quality at...

Orange Line Extension to Roslindale/West Roxbury

The challenge is containing the knock-on effects. If you extend the OL past Roslindale Sq then you need to end Needham Line service, which means extending the OL at least to West Roxbury. But then you have to decide what to do with Needham? Do you leave a light-rail shuttle, do you extend the...

    TheRatmeister's transit, and urbanism diaries

Hexagonal trains in Copenhagen The DSB logo is a hexagon, so the regional trains in Copenhagen are too. They have a hilariously wide loading gauge and as a result have very spacious interiors though. Art in Tiles (Berlin) I started the Metro Photography thread because I think art in transit...

    TheRatmeister's transit, and urbanism diaries

I travel a lot (arguably too much) and so I have a lot of random observations about transit and urbanism from various places, mostly Europe for now. This first batch is almost all transit-related but I'll post more things as I think of them while going through photos or encounter them out in the...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

There's nothing in the design guidelines that I can find that should restrict the current sites for both Belmont and Waverley, a 4º curve is allowed in stations.

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

I'm torn. On the one hand, ( T ) is just such good branding that it's basically impossible to replace. T as in train (or transit I guess), what more you need? On the other hand, yikes that brand image. And yes, if we're doing state-wide rail then the MBTA's current organizational structure is...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

77A wasn't a poorly thought out initiative of the MBTA era, it was a leftover from the BERy era that was as good as dead the minute the Red Line opened to Davis in 1984. I'm surprised it lasted as far as it did, making it to 1998 before being mostly axed and to 2005 before being (almost) fully...

    "Dirty Old Boston"

It's such a shame that BERy was literally a global pioneer in how to build an efficient, connected urban transport network with high quality transfers and then we completely whiffed it afterwards. Everett, (Old) Sullivan, Dudley, Egleston, Maverick, Fields Corner, Ashmont, and Broadway were all...

    "Dirty Old Boston"

I'm not sure if it has been proposed but I think it should be. The bike lanes on the Harvard Bridge took it down from 4 to 2 lanes. Move those to a new bridge and then you can use the 2 lanes you just reclaimed for transit.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

If you don't make any other changes then yes, there are problems. But what if it's bundled with a bunch of other changes? Pedestrianized Newbury St, so no more conflict with vehicles turning out of Newbury Transitway on Mass Ave, either in the center or on the eastern side to minimize...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

There are 2 of us! The MBTA doesn't seem so sure of this. In their 'Mobility Integration Plan' (PDF download warning), they state: "The future state of RTA fare-free funding is unknown; nonetheless, the MBTA’s fare payment system is being designed to consider future fare integration with these...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

I thought this was at least partially already a thing, and that (before the RTAs went fare-free) you could pay on most of them with a Charliecard.

    Transit history/trivia quiz

Depends on where you are. Once you get beyond UK/France/Germany into Eastern and Southern Europe, boarding from low platforms is still common, even at very large stations. Italy (Even Northern Italy) is absolutely terrible for this in my experience.

    Congestion toll in Boston?

Rapid transit projects are great and all but if we're taxing people driving into Boston then money should also be spent on improving how people get into Boston. Regional rail, essentially.

    Congestion toll in Boston?

Now that is definitely a reasonably concern. Reforms to everything engineering, contracting, and project management really shouldn't wait. Yes, if you need to cross the city on errands multiple times every weekday then you might want a car. I sincerely hope that does not apply to very many people.

    Congestion toll in Boston?

These are issues that take money to fix? So where to get this money? A question for the ages oh wait. I mean that's entirely dependent on where you need to stop. Most childcare centers in Boston seem to be pretty transit accessible already. Ideally of course most possible stops would be within...

    Congestion toll in Boston?

The only place I can possibly think of where you could do a pilot would be the North End, bounded by N Washington/Cross St and Atlantic Ave/Commercial St, excluding the North End Garage, Resident Parking Permit holders, commercial vehicles, and disability plates/placards. Nothing else seems...
