    Urbanism/Infrastructure Tools, Databases, and Resources

There's also this website, https://rail.guide/, that looks like it uses the same data as that google map you posted. It is at least an easier url to remember. For some context for others, this one shows all railroads in North America, including abandoned railroads. And https://rail.guide/ lets...

    Urbanism/Infrastructure Tools, Databases, and Resources

I'm starting this thread as a place to keep track of some of the cool and useful tools/websites/databases people use to explore the Boston area. I come across neat tools then forget what they're called. Or someone here will post a link to some wonderful dataset and I can't remember what thread...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

This is crazy. Do you have some (publicly available) sources for this? It shouldn't be that hard to design the platforms so they can be raised a few inches later, right? The GLX stations were built with this kind of future proofing, right?

    Assembly Sq <-> Casino Footbridge

Glad it's moving forward, but that is an expensive bridge. We don't normally spend that kind of money on non-car infrastructure. Can anyone think of any similarly expensive pedestrian infrastructure?

    Massport Logan/Back Bay Shuttle

Hey, you're replying to a post that's over a decade old. The Logan Express does indeed still run to/from Back Bay. It isn't a pilot program. It is permanant. I see you're pretty new to this forum, so welcome. But I also see you've posted twice, and both times you've included a plug for...

    Gillette Stadium Transportation Improvements

Interesting. Do you have a source for that? Or remember how long ago that was?

    Gillette Stadium Transportation Improvements

Has there ever been a proposal to run a train to the stadium from Worcester? It could run Worcester to Framingham, making all stops. Then the Framingham Secondary to the stadium. I feel like you could fill one train on that route.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I don't think their plan is as outrageous as you're making it out to be. This presentation has the most details I've seen so far, and they seem to address a lot of your criticisms. They say they'll have a dedicated line the whole way from O'Hare to their new downtown station. They're using...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I don't doubt they're being pie-in-the-sky, but what part of this looks scammy? I don't know anything about the people involved.

Copper Mill Development | Elm Street and Grove Street | Davis Square

I absolutely do not believe a tower would piss off half of Davis. I'll keep saying, this project reminds me a lot of the one that actually went up in Cambridge Central Square. That's a 20 story tower among mostly four story buildings. It turned out great. I live nearby. I intentionally drop...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Out of curiosity... There were a bunch of estimates for how busy the GLX would be. It's been a couple of years now. Has anyone compared predictions to actual ridership numbers? Almost all of the planning/predictions were made pre-covid, so I'm sure they're off. But it'd be interesting to see.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

That's not really correct. They still recommend using TBM for the tunnel, but much more shallow. They do recommend cut-and-cover for the stations, which would be possible by running the TBM closer to the surface. That would be a heck of a lot cheaper than the current plan of mining deep stations.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

The Effective Transit Alliance in NYC has a report out about how to make the Second Ave Subway extension cheaper and better. This is just about the extension cutting across 125th street. There is a lot of advice, but a lot of it is tied to making the tunnel a lot shallower. They say modern TBM...

    Fantasy T maps

First off, awesome map! As for the pairings, yeah, I really don't know what's best. If you incorporate this into your work, pick what makes sense to you. But here's my reasoning and what I think are the important factors (and I'm doing this from memory, so I might have something wrong here)...

    Fantasy T maps

K, based on this discussion, I slapped together this transit map just for the S-Bahn-like network. It's super rough, but shows how I was thinking it would actually operate and how to best show that. The four thick color lines work effectively like subways. In that region, trains come every...

    Fantasy T maps

That's fair, and maybe that's how it ends up working due to infrastructure limitations. But if at all possible, it'd be much easier for riders if there were just a few clear, consistent routes, at least inside 128-ish. And that's true that most people are going to/from downtown, but there are...

    MBTA Construction Projects

Something here doesn't make sense. Why is the MBTA paying to fix up that line? It's owned by CSX. The MBTA barely uses it. All the benefits mentioned seemed to be for freight traffic. So the MBTA is fixing up CSX's line for the benefit of CSX? I'm sure there's some explanation here. Anyone know...

    Fantasy T maps

I see. I forgot the Munich branches were so infrequent. This mostly makes sense. But if Regional Rail trains are running every 5-8 minutes inside 128, to me, those are subways. So I don't know why they get a "comparable weight" to the other subways. They should probably just be the same...
