Visiting Boston - what arch & U/C spots to see

Eastie Harborwalk isn't a bad vantage point to get the complete picture (plus you can walk along Clippership Wharf and several other new construction projects). The walk itself is enjoyable even if your family doesn't care about the development aspect. But in terms of development you can clearly...

Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

I appreciate what Encore has done and I'm optimistic about what Encore can still do for the aesthetics on this stretch of Broadway. My concern really isn't the views which will continue to improve and evolve for the better. The issue, in my opinion, is that no amount of aesthetic improvement to...

Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

I'm genuinely curious as to whether or not anyone from the team behind this proposal has ever spent any time in the area. There's just no world in which a "terrace" along Broadway is going to be an enjoyable dining experience.

    The New Retail Thread

So this: https://boston.eater.com/2021/4/29/22409804/alexis-cervasio-east-boston-oysters-opening-market-natural-wine-groceries-summer-2021 - is about to open at 110 Meridian St. in Eastie. I’m thoroughly confused by it as it seems like a hipster bodega that will be selling oysters, records, and...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Seems like the new fare kiosks are now at all (or most) of the Blue Line stations. They installed Bowdoin yesterday, and Maverick was done a few days ago. The contactless payment is pretty nice.

    Fenway HoJo's Redevelopment | 1271 Boylston Street | Fenway

Barring a complete redevelopment of the site (which I'm certainly not opposed to even though I like what they've done with the Verb), I'm not sure how much more they could actually do here. I may try to do a staycation next year and grab one of these and some tickets to a Sox game.

    🔷 Open Thread

I loved that little detail. I don't believe the show is filmed in Massachusetts - maybe they just pulled stock B-roll from the studio's archives.

    Clippership Wharf | East Boston

It looks like work is preliminarily underway at the Smoke Shop space (closest to Portside/Tall Ship). Cafe Iterum is well underway up in the space closer to Maverick. The second waterfront spot (further North in the direction of The Eddy) is still unoccupied with no plans (as far as I know) to...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Right, that's essentially what I'm saying. Political pressure is the reason the half-baked proposal is being pushed forward as-is. For the last 20+ years, rail has been pitched to the region as the thing that's going to correct all of the area's ills. It was never going to be the sole savior of...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

I don't know if I completely agree with this. I've generally been in the "building a flawed SCR is better than no SCR" camp, but I don't think it's all that kill-resistant from a political standpoint. This is a service that, for more than a generation, has been pitched as the region's savior...

This thing looks great from some angles but sure is a fatty from others:

    The New Retail Thread

This may have been true in the past, but I think the average tourist is doing their homework ("best restaurants in Boston" is an easy Google search). There are plenty of people still filling seats at Faneuil Hall restaurants, but they're all over the city too. I even see a steady stream of them...

    Best Cafes of Boston

KZ - check out Remnant for coffee (they're a brewery, but I actually like the coffee more than the beer) in Somerville. Davis Square Bagels and Doughnuts has some of my favorite doughnuts in the area too (I prefer them to Kane's or Union Square even if they don't have quite the variety). If...

Assembly Row Development | Assembly Square | Somerville

This is a pretty fair assessment. In addition to what you've indicated, I think the scale and "newness" have no peers elsewhere in Somerville (at least until Union Square development progresses further). It's an outlier in every sense of the word. But I'm still optimistic. The outlet stores are...

    Clippership Wharf | East Boston

Cafe Iterum initially announced that they were opening last winter/spring but by about June I thought they were dead in the water as there was no discernible progress in the space. Work is happening now and they have signage up. Cafe Iterum is in the space next to the T portal, not one of the...

355 Bennington Street | East Boston

What would you have done differently? I wouldn't describe either as groundbreaking from an architectural standpoint, but I do think that Clippership is nice (worthy of the location) and Portside is functional and inoffensive. I have no issue with the heights - they're contextual with the...

355 Bennington Street | East Boston

It certainly is. The events hosted here are free and largely open to the public as well. Live music, outdoor movie screenings, food trucks, etc. I believe they post all of this info on their Instagram page. Related, the last little sliver of the under construction harborwalk (in front of The...

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

I went for lunch today. Im glad it’s finally open and there seemed to be a solid crowd. It’s definitely more Corner Mall with decent vendors than Timeout Market, but it’s a welcome addition.
