DCR Allston-Brighton Riverfront Parks and Parkways

This is maybe a more minor point, but we need to advocate at these meetings to get away from the default "shared-use path" design for everything next to the river. Anyone who has been on the riverbank on a nice day knows that the 10-foot path creates constant conflict between faster bike...

    Biking in Boston

I don't disagree here. I mean that of the streets that are identified as missing links (and are critical holes in a otherwise connected complete network), the ones with the lowest bike modes are highest priority. Those are often the same roads that have the most hostile design.

    Biking in Boston

when looking at the biggest missing links in a connected bike network, I'd argue that missing-link streets with the highest driving mode-share actually need protected bike infrastructure the most. Yes, if you pave over the entire city in wide driving lanes, more people will drive. If you close...

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

Let's be real, there are CONVENTIONAL (non-HSR) intercity rail routes in Europe & Japan that have higher average speeds (90+mph) than the Acela (which ranges from 60-85mph depending on route). Acela isn't really about speed, it's about getting priority over other trains, greater seating comfort...

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

Amazing! I assume this will be a gradual rollout as the old rolling stock is retired? Do we know how many new trainsets Amtrak already has on hand for day 1 service?

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

seems like a great opportunity to extend third rail all the way to wonderland and beyond? That way we don't need to order customized railcars for the next fleet.

    Biking in Boston

Adding to the flexpost removals, the Longfellow bridge has more than half its flexposts missing in both directions. Hopefully just a result of flexposts needing replacement after some were destroyed by plows & cars over the winter. Whenever roads have lane closures and configuration changes...

    Biking in Boston

This removal is quite odd. I'm hoping in the coming few days the city will announce a press release saying they will replace with new/more sturdy barriers by a certain date. It'd be really weird just to leave the lanes unprotected since it doesn't make car throughput any better (since causing...

    Biking in Boston

Love them too. I do wish the newer generation bikes could be a built a (bit) more lightweight, however. I get that it helps with reliability and lifespan but a 45lb bike really deters people who are smaller or have less muscle strength (younger teenagers, smaller women, elderly) from using them...

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

This is the most absurd thing for NIMBY's to rally against lol. Fine, I get the "undesirables" that a subway line will bring in, but a damn bike trail?? Lexington should be plenty of proof that having a greenway makes real estate values go up.

Ride & Car Sharing: Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, Zipcar, Relay Rides

I'm a bit torn on this one, since raising fees on cars ultimately *may* get people to mode shift onto transit. But this is a regressive tax since all younger (less wealthy) people are more likely to use uber and not own cars, while the T is not operable at all hours or just requires too many...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

One can only dream, but I imagine the way to prioritize higher-throughput rail here would be two tracks for RL through Savin Hill, and a quad-track CR railway so all the cape/SCR trains/Greenbush/Plymouth trains can express through this section while local hingham/weymouth trains make all stops...

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

Ok since I somewhat started this whole discussion by bringing up all of the benefits of camera enforcement for non-car people, we should highlight the benefits for drivers too. Off the top of my head I can think of: - fewer blocked boxes & better intersection throughput and flow of cars - more...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Yep - the stations were pretty much designed to minimize cost and disruption to existing parcels of land, rather than have a optimal walkshed. Even the union square station is in the wrong place (too far east & south).. but its better than no GLX at all.

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

It's wild how quickly people are willing to admit to lawbreaking and reckless behavior as soon as their right to drive a car anywhere at any speed is brought into question.

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

In the Boston urban core (which is the topic of this forum, and where most of these cameras will be installed), more than 50% of trips within city limits are done outside a car. I'd estimate its more like 60-70%. If we had better bike, ped, and transit infrastructure, this could easily be 80+%...

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

Seems like this generally a universal boon for anyone outside of a car? Less box-blocking, better traffic flow and increased road capacity from lower travel speeds. Lower tire noise, lower engine noise, lower particle pollution from tire wear, fewer accidents, lower insurance premiums, safer...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

https://mass.streetsblog.org/2025/01/23/city-will-install-lighting-to-dark-segments-of-the-community-path-in-east-somerville 4-6 months and $600k just to install some lamps over a 0.5-mile stretch?? Maybe I'm just naive.. but that should be the cost of like an entire infill station.

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

A bit off topic, but LGA has been winning accolades since its multi-year reconstruction. Sure the flow of people within the terminal has been much improved, but anyone who's been there lately knows the airport roadways are a all-day clusterfuck of cars, ubers, and buses. It's incredible that...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Thanks for the explanation. I never understood why it seems like an entire train has to be held out of service though? Like we have 3 full trainsets but only two in service at any given time. Is it just the third trainset is still in its burn-in period?
