Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

Would the city own the fire station? I ask because the city of Somerville is currently trying to rectify its poor decision to rent a fire station in Assembly Row 5 years ago.

    Platform screen doors.

Interesting detail in this Globe article today: Where should the MBTA look for ideas? For Phil Eng, it’s Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

At what diesel price point do the Amtrak fees become price competitive? The spike in price since the ConnDOT announcement makes me wonder if they’ll be reconsidering now.

    The New Retail Thread

It is? I’ve never even considered going up because I thought it was just a $50 elevator ride for expensive drinks.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

From the platform it felt much closer than that, but a fair point. It’s not unprecedented for excavator rollovers to occur on unstable ground, the tracks are lower than the empty lot. It was just noteworthy seeing the excavator up there and thinking it was getting a bit too close to the tracks...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Yeah I’ve been wondering if there are any restrictions around heavy machinery in the vicinity of active RR tracks. The excavator (pre-fence collapse) was driving around the top of the pile mere feet away from the 90mph commuter rail track. Reddit thread with more photos.

    General Infrastructure

The City of Somerville has had a two street pilot program for enhanced snow clearing enforcement and municipal snow clearing in the case of non-compliance since 2021. The problem is, they abandoned points 2 and 3 of this program at some point in time. I spoke with the new administration about...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

It’s a terrible decision. It would mean spending a billion+ in limited infrastructure funding to cement the unsafe highway design and inefficient land use decisions of the 60s.

    The New Retail Thread

My experience at the Swingers location in NYC was far better than PuttShack. It has actual good courses instead of just single shot gimmicks.

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

I sent an email to the project team (cambridgereidoverpass@dot.state.ma.us), Rep Mike Connolly (Mike.Connolly@mahouse.gov), and CC'd Phil Eng on there for good measure with some detailed criticism of the designs. I would encourage others to do the same. In my view even the designs they...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Can Zone 1A stations with existing fare gates like Ruggles and Porter be configured so there is a single fare control area where CR and subway can be accessed? This would be particularly valuable on the Orange line where the commuter rail can act as an express option if the timing is right.

    Morrissey Boulevard Redesign

Every highway removal sounds crazy until it's done and then people question why it wasn't done sooner. Too many lanes of roadway on too much of our limited waterfront.

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

That’s very interesting, although I struggle to envision a scenario where facade solar would be more efficient than rooftop. It might make sense in a situation where rooftop solar is not viable, like a 5 over 1 that wants a roof deck, but that is not the case with parking garages.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Is this trough a common cause of delays or “catenary issues” that cause disabled trains? I just have not even heard of it as a problem before today so it’s surprising a 15 day shutdown is warranted with that as the focus. Is it higher priority than GLTPS or would they have needed 15 days for...

    Biking in Boston

How does that compare to the current makeup of the council? Were the councilors who delayed the implementation punished electorally? I know Nolan was one of them.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I also saw an E train terminate at East Somerville and reverse back to Heath St for the first time yesterday. Seems like they are experimenting with different ops adjustments to address bunching? Terminating at East Somerville doesn’t work all that well because the switch is ahead of the...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Have we considered a tip jar at North and South stations for riders who want to help save up the $20 Billion?
