If Northeastern had not bought the arena in 1979 it would have been demolished by the MDC. The building straddled the original Boston shoreline. The western side was settling faster than the eastern side. It would have cost $100,000,000 to prop up the western end, remove the soil, replace it...

I had seen that already. I noticed in the final picture they showed the arena before all the structural support was added.

Agreed but i Agreed but I would rather see Northeastern funding specific community groups and projects rather than it going to the city's general fund and allowing the political machine to play with it.

Now that Northeastern has bowed to the city's extortion by raising its PILOT payments to the city, construction can finally proceed.

I have seen a picture of the embankment taken from the rear of what is now Curry circa 1970. Of course I have memories of it. It was stone, blackened by a century of grit.

It was never "elevated" like the old Orange Line. It was an embankment. It was a solid wall separating the Fenway and Northeastern from Roxbury.

I remember the plan to wreck the reflecting pool! Glad that never happened.

I heard back then that they were waiting for the Lyra to be finished as the city would not allow both sidewalks on Huntington to be blocked at the same time. That is an old memory.

If it is empty and eventually fails, Northeastern will buy it at a fire sale price and convert it to academic space!;)

The Boston Symphony is planning to build a high-rise condo building across the street. The Midtown Hotel will eventually be replaced with a high rise.
