South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Since it's CIP from this point up, the steel work will be done. It makes sense why we see the pause in vertical construction, because in order to start the concrete portion they need to complete the last floor of steel so they have somewhere to form & support the cast in place floors.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

Never knew this existed so I had to do some searching. Found some additonal photos I thought worth sharing, plus this document on the history of the station & railroads in the area. Source: http://www.worcesterthen.com/Shorts/Arches/Arches.htm Source...

There are also similar concrete elements on the bus terminal side of the core. These basically serve to channel the majority of the tower loads into the concrete core to reduce the amount of steel columns going through the concourse/track area. I imagine we'll see some interesting steel work in...

I'm not sure where you're getting that it's a completely different fare system. They just talk about it being a different vehicle class than the MTA currently operates which requires new maintenance faculties, storage, personnel, etc. In the alternative analysis summary on page 22 they even...

For what it's worth, if you look closely at the video of the construction sequence you can see around the structural arches first then around the 1:00 mark you see final shape/finishes applied.

    Site Issues

Was down for me as well. I also checked Skyrisecities, which was also down. FYI there is a subreddit r/ArchbBOSTON. In case the site goes down again it would be a good place to regroup.

I guess the new purple "infinity" logo Suffolk unveiled wasn't working out. Looks like they subtly switch back to the old logo.

According to the project website, the tower won't really get going till next year. That being said, I wouldn't be totally surprised to see some steel poking up by the end of the year. Additional project updates.

Just saw this. Former Mass Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey is going to be the new president of New York City Transit. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/23/nyregion/nyc-subway-chief-richard-davey.html

Springfield/Chicopee/Westfield area is really the only option. 1.5-2hrs each way to Boston or Albany depending on how you hit rush hour. Seems not ideal but doable considering that's what most people that come into NYC from the burbs are dealing with.

Be prepared to be extremely frustrated with this one. The routing often makes absolutely no sense. Still fun though.

I'm getting big One Bryant Park vibes from that entry rendering. Overall I give it a resounding "meh". I would agree that losing the sloped diamonds was a big downgrade. According to the Yimby article: The roof height of 1 WTC is listed as 1,368ft, so effectively the same height.

I actually think that a wide open platform area would work pretty well, especially considering you would likely see the buses through the glass above the trains. It would make for an interesting juxtaposition of transit modes.
