I think a case can be made that this should go on the National Register of Historic Places as the last surviving West End tenement. Assuming it is that.

I disagree. As much as Boston historians would love for Scollay Square to suddenly come back or for the city to reinvent the area to make it look like the Square, it simply won't happen. The old West End is gone and it's not coming back. It sucks but it's something that we must deal with. Maybe that building is unique in its own way, but preserving it isn't bringing back history. If the city or a developer decided they wanted activate that part of the city by tearing down the old tenement and putting up a mixed use building, or something that makes the area a little better, then I'd support it. The crime was done years ago and we simply have to live with the results.

I just wonder how this one building managed to survive.

That's not how it works. The building has significance as a reminder of what once was.

It's a tenement, not the Roman Coliseum. I'm all for keeping it for now, but if something better can be built to help improve an area of the city that is painfully vapid, I won't cry myself to sleep over losing this building. The damage was done years ago and modern (and progressive) developers shouldn't be stifled because of it.

I wouldn't object to demo if they could restore a little bit of streegrid in here, by Id rather see Martha and lomasney and Nashua narrowed, with the island of the line tenement widened, a couple of low rises wedged in next to the tenement and retention of the small park. Cold have enough space for a little store and little cafe/bar.

And they really need to do something with that pitiful west end memorial park under the ramp. Nobody cuts the grass and it could at least be a nice looking space.
