Attention ArchBoston Photographers!

Holy shit.

It's a shame Bowest isn't around anymore.

This would be a fun project and a great way to get our names out there. I've always wanted to make a book of my work but didn't know where to start. Thanks for this!

My friend Kelly, a gifted photographer and graphic designer, has done a couple of these with botanicals and Dale Chihuly glass sculptures. The quality is great, and it's not out-of-sight expensive.

Yeah. I was really impressed by this.

I would love to see a collaborative project done here. Photos + text.

I won't name names but we also have some great writers here. If we could get it all together without too many ego clashes we could have a great book. Some one posts a picture, then some one else adds the text. We 'vote' on what makes it into the book and put together.

And if you do something on your own, make sure you post it here so we can pick up a copy!

I've been bugging Briv for a photography section for a long time now. This would be a great place in which to put a project like this together.

Some ideas I have bouncing around in my head:

A straight-out photo book: Nothing but photos and credits.

A descriptive photo book: Like above except with more information about what we are seeing. If it is a photo a building, it would have the name of building, date completed, architect and any interesting history, facts or trivia. Kind of what I wanted the ABWiki to be.

An urban design book: This would be my first choice. Rather than just focusing on individual buildings, it would look at how these buildings, and groups of buildings interact with the people who use them and how they add up to a collective whole (either successfully or not). There would be long shots of Hanover Street, City Hall & Plaza, Washington Street, etc in addition to pictures of buildings by themselves. This would need a strong editorial hand, but it would also be the most in the spirit of ArchBoston.

The first two seem doable with what we have now. The last one seems like more of a project where people wouldhave to be sent out to get certain shots. That is also doable but would require more time and energy.

On another note, I had always wanted to do a photo set of the great Post Modern buildings around town. Sure there are some duds but I think there are some really interesting designs out there. I never had the time and now I don't live in the city anymore. Maybe this would be the catalyst for getting me off my ass.

^^ The ArchBoston Series:

I like the idea of a series. We should think about having a unifying design for all the books. Also we might think of expanding the site to show off the images and information.

I've always felt this site could be so much more and maybe having some books will give us more cred.

I'm gonna throw a book together tonight and report my findings when I get it in the mail.

cool - keep us in the loop.

I may make one too .. hmmmmm

If it's going to be Boston-based, promise me you'll keep it focused on "Boston". Too many times I buy a book about Boston architecture, etc, and end up with photos of Harvard Yard.

If we do a series we could do a Cambridge book in the 'Neighborhoods' series. Or we can do a Boston-area college campus book.

You ought to prohibit pictures of:

Paul Revere and the Prado.
Anyone in colonial costume, unless they are being beaten.
"Old Ironsides".
"Old North Church".
Anything that is identified with any of the following words: "Ye, Olde, Shoppe" unless it is on fire or features nudity.
The steaming teapot.
Louisburg Square.
Red Sox pinkhats.
Anyone wearing a Yankees Suck shirt.
Anyone holding green beer.
"River dancers", unless they are dancing in a river of green beer. Preferrably toxic.
Shamrocks.
Harvard.
Swan boats.
Ducklings. (If you do, make way for vomit.)

Well, I'll admit they look happy. Quack it up while you can, mallards. Duck hunting season is right around the corner!

Don't forget to add duckboats to that list, toby.

But I have no objection to showcasing Cambridge's most well endowed university in any book about Boston. Come on, being a stone's throw from Harvard is one of the few things that still sets it apart from Charlotte, Atlanta, and Houston.
