Good start to the trip, whisking past this giant mess in comfort and speed, while also proving my point about induced demand:

Hello Chicago. A picture with a little of everything:

Alleys are popular:

The so-called "Alley El", perhaps why they survived so well, they run behind buildings mostly outside the Loop:

(gotta love the AVAILABLE land next to the station in a gentrified neighborhood, oO)

I guess here's what it takes to run 24/7 service (Red Line). In general, CTA seemed awfully blase about track workers hopping around live lines:

Kimball:
IMG_20140724_114953.jpg

Rapid transit third-rail grade crossing near Kimball. It turns out that these crossings are a lot more common than I remembered. I must have seen over a dozen of them between Brown, Pink, Purple and Yellow lines. Puts our Green Line in some perspective:

18th Street near Ashland:

IMG_20140725_130545.jpg

Ashland Ave near 18th Street. I took a particular interest in Ashland Ave because of the BRT proposal that CTA is really pushing. A very auto-oriented street, lots of bulldozed lots, industrial areas, and partial remainders of an urban past. Quite possibly, a street that could greatly benefit from the central lanes being dedicated to BRT:
IMG_20140725_133611.jpg

IMG_20140725_130735.jpg

The proprieter of Lupita's Restaurant said that he heard of the BRT proposal, and thought it would be good for business:
IMG_20140725_130738.jpg

Also told me that the nearby University tried to tear down the building below for dorms, but owner wouldn't sell. Good for him.
IMG_20140725_133545.jpg

Last trip is shortly before 3 a.m., first trip is shortly after 3 a.m., that I looked up. 24/7 bus route:
IMG_20140725_133825.jpg

BRT proposal phase 1 ends here, underneath expressway with Orange Line running in the median. Pretty awkward routing for the bus. It has to turn into the lot, go around a lot of curves and waste a lot of time. And almost everyone onboard the bus (standing room only) was riding thru:

Broadway in East Lakeview turned out to be a refreshing change from typical Chicago. Not broad, in fact, and happening:

CTA had a meltdown on my way to the airport, an easy if boring 45m trip turned into a harrowing train-shuttle-train saga of 90+ minutes. But at least Wicker Park was having a good time while we waited on the single tracking:
IMG_20140726_171656.jpg

So, um yeah, I guess that's CTA's response to flying trains:

Awesome pics! I love Chicago ever since I went there one summer. Hopefully I'll visit there again soon.

Yeah it's pretty cool to see how many different kinds of buildings are mixed together. They aren't afraid to do that. Also, they aren't afraid to build townhouses, rowhouses and "brownstones" that mostly-but-not-really mimic the old. Seems to work -- prices are significantly cheaper there than here. We could learn a thing or two.

The big long avenues freak me out. Too goddamn straight and flat. Mind boggling for a (nearly) lifelong east coaster.

People are friendly, I suppose. I certainly heard more stories from store owners and bartenders than I ever would expect here.

A chunk of my family is from Chicago but I did not visit at any time between 1999 and 2011 because I was being stupidly lazy about it. A shame. Got some catching up to do.

You know, I check the Northwestern Facilities Management project pages with some regularity, and I hadn't expected the first good pictures I'd get of the Visitors Center would be on AB, but there you go. Great pictures!

FWIW, when you took the one of the Foster stop (the first one in the Evanston section) you were backed up against my old college apartment... :)

wow, I've lived in Chicago for over a year and haven't canvassed the city as much as you did in that one trip.

One thing worth exploring is the Milwaukee Ave Corridor, and the culture of new-build, infill, "Dwell"ish modern boxes that get plugged into the gentrified/-fying neighborhoods like West Town, Logan Square, Bucktown, Wicker Park, Humboldt Park, Avondale, etc. Here is an extreme example, but also there is a more developer-y typology that pops up on nearly every street, in a way that I never saw in Boston except as one-offs here and there around Camberville.

Also I like the 70s/80s equivalents over in Old Town/Lincoln Park, less infill-y, more modular, with all the brick townhouses with 45 degree angles and now-mature trees....

Two more:

I also went to Lillie Q's in Wicker Park but I neglected to take pictures. Nice area. My cousin said that it is much different from ten years ago.

I may have covered a lot of ground but it was very superficial. The "L" makes for a good quick tour, but obviously from a distance.

More great NU pictures! I have to say, the NU design vernacular (and it really is one) looks pretty office park-ey on the lakefront. The aesthetics in the recital hall, however (the concrete bulge on the building to the right) are supposed to be stunning. All warm wood paneling with the entire back wall made up of skyline and water. That's what Berklee and NEC wish they could do (while still keeping the urban setting, of course).

They also did a great job of camouflaging the enormous parking garage. Can't tell unless you know.

Rather than create a new thread im just gonna post some of pictures of a recent trip to chicago
