where would you choose to live if you just won $252m?

I think i would either look for a nice brownstone in the heart of beacon hill, or a condo on one of the highest levels in 45 province.

or would you leave boston altogether?

For Boston, probably a rowhouse in Bay Village. I love that nabe.

Outside of Boston, maybe a modest mansion on the coast in Beverly Farms?

i would scour dense, ped-friendly neighborhoods for a buildable/improvable lot and hire office da to create a home for me.

or i'd move to madrid

In the state, I'm thinking a condo in Rowes Wharf with a big balcony would be my type of place when not on permanent vacation.

I can't imagine having that much money (who among us could?). I would probably travel a lot and stay at fancy hotels instead of settling down with a house/condo.

Duh, if I won that money, I'd live in the penthouse at Columbus Center, which they'd give to me gratis due to my $100 million investment.

^^ I was thinking along the same lines, except @ Filenes.

Hancock observatory floor. Not like it's getting used for anything else lately...

My other option is the house/mansion on the corner of Comm Ave & Berkley St, north side.

Of all the beautiful homes on that stretch of Comm Ave, that one has always stood out to me.

Plus, my inner-suburbanite likes the idea of having a lawn and off-street parking.

In my own heated/airconned airplane hanger at Logan furnished with:
Ryan PT22
Bugatti T57
Delage D6.70 Jelm coupe
Talbot Lago (various racing models)
Cunningham (Vignale coupe)
Replica of Sheehan's Bar in Northampton, circa 1992

Yeah, that's nice and all but then you would have to live in Eastie.

;)

FP3 or another loft in Fort Point. Cuz at that point I could just a take a cab everywhere and I'd be close to South Station and Logan for quick trips to wherever I wanted.

Didn't consider that angle, but I'd be close to my man Beton Brut, Santarpios, and imagine the parties!

Nice choices, Toby. The Cunningham is fresh!

I think I'd winter in Acapulco.

Napa might be nice for the rest of the year.

Perhaps Ken Yeang could be convinced to do a modest residence on Ocean Ave in Newport, if I could find a lot.

It's not so bad over here, statler...There are a couple of dodgy three deckers up the hill from me. It might be fun to replace them with a riff on this LA icon. Bitchin' view of downtown...

Mi casa es su casa, Toby...

That wink was to you Beton. :)

I know some nice people from Eastie.

Besides, I live in Malden, so I'm not exactly one to be throwing stones...

No offense taken, statler.

This topic actually interests me. Essentially, quantify your neighborhood's value (or meaning, in the personal, "nostalgic" sense). If money were no object, would you stay? Most people say they'd split for someplace, anyplace better. My family's been here in East Boston since 1915. With enough loot, I guess I would too...

Alas, money is an object. And I prefer my neighborhood to have more in common with Cambridge and Somerville than Chelsea and Revere (so to speak). Sometimes I get sad about how disinterested and detached my neighbors can be about issues that deserve their attention and voices. Ineffectual pols, mismanaged state agencies, and ill-conceived public policy don't help.

Am I nuts to invest a year's salary on my home? I hope not.

Why, hello Mr. Cussler!

And, that Chris Craft! What a boat! I would hope it's been restored as described. Too many of those beauties look pretty on the outside, but are rotted through and through. I'd guess this one is fine though, it's only a few miles from my humble suburban St. Louis abode, and all we have are lakes and rivers.

My choice! Oh, I'd likely spend a lot of my time vacationing. I'd like to design as much of my environment myself. I'd split my time between a condominium in the city (FP3, Beacon Hill, Back Bay).

Next would come the harborside compound in old-town Marblehead, which would double as my racing team headquarters. For my personal use, there'd be a Wally Tender to get out to my choice of a Wally Power 118 or a custom yacht similar to the Wally Esense 143. Then the professional boats, surely a TP-52, an America's Cup contender that whips the stuffing out of the BMW Oracle Racing 90x90 Tri, and just for kicks and giggles, a custom VO-70 to knock the silly Ericsson boys off their throne.

The rest of my time would be split snowboarding all over the world, spending time at a log cabin of my own design in the Canadian backcounty, vacationing/drinking in the British Virgin Islands, exploring the Phillipines, Europe, and devoting my full effort to bettering the world and getting rich doing it. Oh, it's possible.

My, have I overspent myself? I guess that's what investing is for.

Old Cuss is a nut.

My dream isn't all that unique. Check out any of those Ultimate Garage books!

Looks like I have a shot at a bigger hanger now.
