Portland, ME opportunity: Urban Designer
Planning & Urban Development-
The City of Portland Department of Planning and Urban
Development has an opening for an Urban Designer. We are seeking an
experienced planning and design professional with excellent
communication skills to undertake a wide variety of projects related to
the comprehensive plan of the city, including district or neighborhood
plans, housing, multi-modal transportation, and update of zoning, design
standards and site plan ordinances and will manage public art projects.
The ideal candidate will possess all of the following attributes:
knowledge of best and emerging practices in urban planning and
regulatory mechanisms related to community form, vitality, and economic
development; professional knowledge, skills, training and experience in
the field of urban design, including architecture, landscape
architecture, and/or environmental design; ability to plan and conduct
community workshops with an emphasis on creative and graphic engagement
to help the participants explore and communicate views and visions;
ability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively
with teammates, elected officials, residents and other stakeholders;
skill working with graphic imaging and modeling methods, such as
SketchUp©, AutoCAD©, PhotoShop©. A minimum of two years’ experience in
urban design and a Bachelor’s degree in planning or design related
field is required. A Master’s degree in planning, architecture,
landscape architecture, urban design, or environmental design is
preferred. Any equivalent combination of knowledge skills and abilities
required. This is a unique opportunity to help shape and build the
vision of Portland’s future. $982 - $1,106/wk. plus 6% differential to
be paid upon attainment of a State of Maine certification as a
Landscape Architect or 6% differential to be paid upon attainment of
certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners as a
Certified Planner.
