Recent trip to the University of Kansas, in Lawrence. Here are some of the pictures of downtown Lawrence (along Massachusetts St.-posers), the campus, and a tiny, little bit of urban exploration I did (probably can't even be considered UE, but it's a start) along the dam. Enjoy.

Starting with the UE:

Now, some of downtown Lawrence. Surprisingly urban, but likely only due to the university. A lot of people I talked to referred to Lawrence as a little urban oasis in the Midwest.

And finally, the KU campus. Mostly along Jayhawk Blvd.

This bus shelter seems a little backwards.

This is Wescoe "Beach," a popular place for students to gather. According to the guide, this is the most popular place on campus for students to meet up-I thought it odd considering it's basically a really small version of City Hall Plaza. This building, called Wescoe Hall, was originally planned to be a 25 story tower-but (luckily, in my opinion) the university ran out of money.

I don't remember what building this is, but I wish I had more time, better light, and a better camera. I really liked all of the layers and textures.

And that's all, folks.

I love that there is a Darwin Hall. This is a state that taught creationism until 2007.

Well, it's not technically Darwin hall, there's the names of many other famous scientists engraved on it. It's actually the Natural History Museum.

And, all the kids who grow up believing in creationism go to K-State. They all call KU "Gay-U" because it's more liberal than almost every school in the Midwest, save perhaps Wash U and anything in Chicago.

Kennedy,
Thanks for the Kansas pics. As a former midwesterner, I have to quibble a bit with your evaluation of KU as a liberal place. Yes, it is relatively more liberal than Kansas State, but that's not saying much. I've always considered Univ. of Wisconsin/Madison to have the uncontested reputation as the most politically liberal major college in the midwest. Maybe next up is Minnesota/Twin cities.

Probably, but compared with Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa? I kind of consider Wisconsin and Minnesota to be more northern states more than midwestern states. Anyhow, I'm just going on what I've been told by all the Mizzou fans who just love to trash KU. And of course, even moderate liberals are clearly spawns of the devil [/sarcasm].

It's really very humorous, if you consider yourself more left, to listen to some of the things they write about in the papers around here. There's a little, local newsmagazine that featured letters to the editor during the election with lines like, "All God-fearing Catholics who voted for Obama should beg Him for forgiveness, because factual evidence shows Obama directly linked to terrorism. True conservatives must ready themselves for the battle ahead and display in full color the ideology of the great Ronald Reagan." That's hardly paraphrased.
