I am curious, why is it that Massachusetts does not use lights to illuminate the signs on the highway? In and around Boston there are a few signs that have the lights on them, but they are not being used. An example would be the entrance to 93 S up by where Storrow crosses the Science Museum station.

Is it a waste of money? There are a number of signs on the Pike and 93 that are tough to read at night.

Also, what are you thoughts on illuminating the street name signs in the city? I know this is popular in places like Las Vegas and Southern California. I was down in NYC the other week and noticed they have begun to use them.

You know, I never noticed that about the highway lights....

Maybe its because highways here (around Boston) have lights, while highways in many other states only have lights at exits.

As for the second question, there was a debate here last year, when the city started installing the new larger street signs in kenmore square (since added to some other intersections). I like them lit up, but others said it looked too las vegasy

It has to do with time honored Boston tradition of having confusing, outdated and generally crappy street and highway signs. An old yankee trait, I think. Maybe it's just to show the world how uniquely New Englandy we are.

I like it when I'm driving through towns in Massachusetts I'm not familiar with and every street has a sign except for the main streets. Every trip is an adventure and I get to practice my u-turning skills.

I guess this thread works

I noticed this because the new LED lights are very bright.

F was the worst, E and C were my favorites

All new infrastructure should be democratically tested this way.

The Greenway: A greenish new park!

Did you know that the Greenway is more than a highway median? The city of Boston is testing different uses for this extremely valuable swath of city land! This allows us to compare the attractiveness of different uses.

What would you like to see on the Greenway? Another flowerbed? A Wal-Mart? A private garden for the Harbor Towers?

Please log onto our survey site and help us make a decision!

Better yet, start rebuilding the Greenway so the "people" can see how their "option" would turn out. ("How do you know if you'll hate teh evil shadowz until you try them in August?")

I was driving down Storrow the other night and noticed they have changed the lights along the Esplanade, they look like they offer better lighting. Does anyone know when this was done?

It was done sometime this year. They use the new LED lights Boston is testing on the common.

It is very bright. They were halfway done when I noticed them in late September
