If you haven't heard about it, check out the Marine Week website to see more details about the live Marine displays around the city for the next week. There's been advertisements on the subway lines for the past week or so, I had no idea what it was going to be though.

I saw one of the helicopters land in the Commons from the 10th floor of 73 Tremont; it was quite an awesome sight. I wandered over there and they had 3 helicopters, 2 tanks, and an Osprey (vertical-take-off plane). I took pictures on my phone but my phone's camera is apparently shittier than ever, so you can't make anything out. Anyways, I suggest you guys head over to the Commons, Copley, Quincy Market, or the Navy Yard. I was told there's going to be a demonstration of a beach landing in Moakley Park on Thursday.

If you go, be sure to bring a camera and post pics here please. My battery is dead but I will be sure to get some pics over the next few days.

Also check out www.FaceBook.com/MarineWeek for updates.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm sure that we'll get some awesome displays and demonstrations, but I'm uncomfortable celebrating US imperialism (which is a waste of tax dollars and a primary cause of budget deficits)

I like the helicopters for obvious reasons.

!!!RON MAKE LURKER ANGRY!!!

We have a budget deficit because congress can't pass and stick to a balanced budget. Cutting the defense budget would NEVER solve the overall budget problem, as the thieves in congress would re-appropriate the funds for other pet projects. Remember where the peace dividend went? It sure as hell wasn't paying off the Cold War debt like it was intended to be.

And if you honestly think the US is imperialist, I hate to break it to you, but every country on the planet acts in its own interests. Some more openly than others of course. All the supposedly cuddle peacenik Europeans had a 600 year history of imperialism before it become unfashionable and still, to a surprisingly large extent, practice rather unsavory control over parts of the globe through fairly sinister and discrete means.

Then don't think that way. While the governments are the ones making war decisions, these are the guys who are the ones risking their lives on the battlefield for us. Cheer for the marines, just don't cheer for the generals who sit and command from a comfy base.

I guess the shit-asses in congress sent the loot to Blackwater, instead --and don?t forget Halliburton.

And these "fairly sinister and discrete means" are ? ?

Those sinister and discrete means are way less expensive though. Score one for European diplomatic intrigue.

Seriously, I just saw an ad for this thing. Why is there going to be a militarism festival in Boston?

Europe uses NGO, mercenaries, riders in trade and aid agreements, intelligence operatives, bribery, and assassination to continue to stick it to former colonial possessions on a regular basis. Rather than be up front with such things, all business is conducted through a third party to avoid incrimination.

Are the helicopters going to be there all week? Def want to check them out but totally forgot about it today!!

CH-53!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They were blowing their horns at downtown crossing today. Nothing like some military marches to make a hot day even less bearable.

Get 'em out of Copley Square and off the Common, I don't need to see them!

But they are really cool, I have to admit.

I'm curious what this means: "Marines volunteer to help restore the Chestnut Hill Reservoir."

Did using the reservoir temporarily as a backup water supply somehow damage it?

Probably nothing different from the usual volunteer cleanup and maintenance days community groups, schools, and corporations do from time to time. It's probably a benefit for any outdoor area to have a large group of well organized and able bodied people available for a day's worth of labor.

Get 'em out of Copley Square and off the Common, I don't need to see them!

So avoid the area for a few days if it offends you that much, it's not going to kill you. Not everyone is this city appreciates the hassles brought by all of the ethnic/gay pride parades and protest marches that frequently tie up public spaces either but we suffer through it.

Well, I just got back from Faneuil Hall. I was actually looking forward to checking out all the equipment they use and learning more about it.

The equipment is HUGE and obviously very powerful (when not crippled like these were, of course). And yes, kinda cool. The marines seemed nice enough. I'm sure they are hand selected for these assignments.

The gun display put me off a bit. Something about seeing a group of ten year-olds playing with real* guns and pretending to shoot each other while the marines just stood and watched (or helped). Now, I grew up playing 'war' with my friends using sticks, plastic guns and action figures, but seeing a mother help her 4 year-old daughter pick up a real* machine gun and point it at Faneuil Hall, was just a bit weird.

I walked away feeling there is a difference between appreciating what these guys do (and I do) and celebrating it (which is what this seemed to be about).

*Obviously these things were decommissioned and crippled

Edit: Heh, just talked to a coworker who was there a little after me. She said a Boston cop had to come over and tell the kids to stop pointing the guns at people.

Saw an Osprey overfly Brookline Village around 10:20 this morning. Seems a useful aircraft if the bugs are worked out of the technology. I wonder if a variant will ever make it into the civil air market.

I'm kinda bummed my dad is missing all of this. I think his old unit must be in town.

From a PR standpoint what's worse: letting anyone pick up and handle the equipment (which while deactivated is essentially a paperweight) or having some marine discriminate and yell at people, "don't let you kids touch that!".

From a safety standpoint, it's a bad idea to let any children develop the idea that any type of firearm is inherently safe or an object to be played with.
