I recently moved to Cambridge (just off the Common near the Sheraton Commander Hotel). I'm trying to get to know the area, and would appreciate some suggestions from forumers familiar with it. Obviously Harvard Square is nearby, but I'm looking for more utilitarian things, such as the nearest (and/or best nearby) grocery store. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Nearest small local grocery is Evergood, on the west side of Mass. Ave. between Harvard and Porter. Nearest supermarket is Shaw's in Porter Square.

Nearest drugstore is a Brooks (soon to be Rite-Aid), near Evergood and on the same side of the street.

Generally I encourage you to just walk the length of Mass. Ave. between Harvard Square and about Meacham Road, discovering what's there. Take a side trip into the Porter Square strip-mall, which has many useful stores such as Tags Hardware and Porter Square Books. It's a pleasant walk.

Thanks, Ron. I was hoping there was a Spa or something lurking in the side streets, but I guess everything's on Mass Ave.

West of Mass. Ave between Harvard and Porter, it's all residential until you get to the corner of Huron and Concord Aves, where 'Huron Village' begins. The few exceptions I can think of are Masse's Hardware and Jose's Mexican restaurant, widely separated on Sherman St.

But there are a few small shops including the "Oxford Spa" on Oxford Street, one long block east of Mass. Ave.

Nice place you've landed, czsz. On day's like this, I actually miss my old job at Radcliffe.

The Oxford Spa is a great place. Good food, earthy vibe. Last time I was there, they were spinning a Pixies record. I'd also highly recommend Darwins, on Mt Auburn, at the bottom of Ash Street; great sandwiches and pre-cooked food. The coffee's great, and Steve and Woody (the guys who ran the place a few years back) are both cool (I believe Steve is the owner). I recall there being a coin-op laundry next door, in case you need one of those.

If you enjoy live music (classical or jazz), Pickman Hall at the Longey School of Music is steps away.
