After traveling to East Boston this last week, and actually taking the time to look around, I was absolutely blown away by this area of the city. I almost never hear anything about East Boston, but the views here are definitely the best in the entire city. You can see the South Boston waterfront, downtown Boston, the Zakim Bridge, The Tobin Bridge, the Bunker Hill Monument, and much more, all at the same time. The streets are a grid, and it is home to the best pizza house in Boston, Santarpios. I managed to grab a few shots when I was here and I definitely plan on going back. I just cant figure out why noone ever talks about East Boston, nowadays its all about Southie, or the city itself. If you guys could tell me what you like/dislike about East Boston that would be great because I can definitely see myself moving here once I take care of a few things.

Like:
  • Interesting, Diverse Housing Stock
  • Very Walkable and bikable within the neighborhood
  • Affordable
  • Great hispanic restaurants and establishments
  • views
  • Santarpio's
  • The Blue Line/how close you are to Downtown, North End, Beacon Hill, Chinatown, Leather District, South Boston Waterfront via public transportation
  • How close you are to beaches

Dislike:
  • (Applies to me, biased) How far it is from where I work
  • Walking/biking to or from the neighborhood is extremely difficult from most places; lack of pedestrian or bike connection downtown without taking very convoluted routes.
  • Lack of Blue/Red Connector makes traveling via public transportation to South Boston (not the waterfront), Dorchester, Quncy, South Shore, Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington, Belmont, Waltham, Watertown, etc. extremely difficult. This is especially important for commuting purposes.
  • The Government Center Station shutdown for 2 years adds Newton, Allston, Brighton, etc. to that list.

Which reminds me: need to hit up some of those great restaurants some extra times before the Gov't Center closure.

Although it wouldn't benefit me directly, I really think they ought to consider running some kind of Maverick to Red shuttle bus during the closure. Just to see what the demand is. I guess with the Callahan closed the best route would be through the Ted to South Station or something. Or just start priming SL-Chelsea by running on surface streets.
