Urban Sketches

I like pen and ink city drawings and, relatively recently, have started to do my own. Here is one I am currently working on of Boston, which I thought might interest some. Thanks to Statler for the recommendation on which angle to sketch the city from (which he mentioned over two years ago):

I hope to provide updates as I complete this.

And for anyone interested, here is one I completed of Cincinnati. The larger picture is when it was still in progress, and the smaller picture is a cropped version of the same. Unfortunately I don't have any digital copies of the completed whole yet.

Here's one I've done of Portland, Maine:

Any other artists or art enthusiasts out there?

Wow! These are very nice. Considering the Cincinnati drawing, I can't wait to see how your Boston skyline comes out.

Word! Very awesome, and very well done.

I know the KZ has a great book of floor plans he makes up of schools. Calling you out man, post some of that stuff!

Impressive. I'm looking forward to updates.

(Please post larger images if you're comfortable doing so.)

Justin, the size posted is the size that links from my facebook, which is easier for me to use than uploading to a site like image shack. However, if you would like a larger final version, just e-mail me and I'll give you a full sized version once I have it scanned.

here's another I have been working on for a friend.

Thanks man, I seriously appreciate that. It keeps me motivated!

These are all absolutely incredible! I especially like the one of Portland at the top of this page. Great work, keep it up! Can't wait to see Boston!

Cool stuff, how long does it take you to draw one?

Thanks GW. They range in time required. The one of Portland, Maine (at the top of this page) was more of a fun sketch, which I did with very little straight edge assistance, and it basically took a whole summer's worth of spare time.

This really rough sketch of a street bending around a corner took 10 to 15 minutes

So far, the street scene with the pitched roof building between the two triple deckers has taken about a week or so. Boston has taken about 3 days so far, but there is much to be done.

The one with the very detailed trees and the streetlamps took about a year, but I worked on it only intermittently (when I had time), and the one of Cincinnati, by far the most detailed, took just about a year. The Cincinnati one is large, about 3 feet wide.

I'd really like to see the work of some others, if anyone has some of either their own or of those they know. I was inspired by an artist here in Maine, named Bill Harrison, who has done some phenomenal work of cities across the country, including Boston. Check out his work:

In my opinion, the sampling of images shown on that link are not his best.

this is a rough sketch of the Fidelity Building on Congress St. in Portland. I like these kinds of rough sketches. This was done in approximately 10 minutes on a piece of scrap paper.

I Drew this when I was a teenager...admittedly not the best work, and also something I plan to finish touching up. looks better in a frame from a distance
