I'm looking at purchasing a new camera sometime soon, mostly for photo taking around my home, and to contribute here, and some of my sports photos. I have a Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot that really stinks. I wanted a good camera, that's simple for beginners to use, and will give me quality photos.

I was looking at Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd, it's about $180.

Also, anyone know some cheap/free photo-edit software? Unfortunately I can't afford a $1,000 Photoshop license...

Just testing a new photo hosting site...

I'm a Canon man myself, always been very happy with them. If you are just getting started then you should really only go for the more commercial point-and-shoots just to figure out what you are doing. Unfortunately I cannot give you any good ones since I shoot with dSLRs.

Check out http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ this is an amazing store and when you order something they send you their catalog ever few months which is straight up camera porn.

well id love a dslr but unfortunately, theyre a tad bit our of my price range.

My friend, there are many places where you can get Photoshop for less than that or free, even legally!

Here are two legal options:

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Adobe/Photoshop+Elements/928915

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Adobe/Photoshop+Extended/933475

And of course you can get them for free, PM me for details.

How about a Nikon D40 or D60? I've always been partial to Nikons (they make excellent binoculars and range-finding equipment for sailing), but these models seem in my price range with a decent set of features, and room for expansion in the lens department.

Considering buying a dSLR.

For a true amateur who wants to learn to use a dSLR are the 50/40Ds worth the price upgrade over the Rebels?

I would think it would be better to spend the extra money on lens and then buy a better body in the future when one is more comfortable with dSLRs. Are the Rebels really crippled compared to the 40/50Ds or are they just missing some bells and whistles?

Also are the new Rebels (T1i) worth the price upgrade over the older models (XSi/XTi) which are plummeting in price right now?

Anyone had any experience with Hunts? I'd like to buy local, but their prices seem higher than what I can find online.
And what about all these shops on Ebay? "If it looks to good to be true.." comes to mind.

B&H is an excellent source for equipment, and their pricing and service are both excellent. I purchase all of DFCI's cameras and consumer electronics -- 90% of our business goes to B&H.

Hunts is a good local source. I've also sourced business to Calumet.

Newtonville Camera has decent pricing.
