Just out of curiosity, why do the vast majority of forum members not use avatars?

I do on other sites, but I don't here simply because I can't seem to find one that fits. Most other sites I'm a member have to do with sports or some sort of entertainment (simtropolis.com for simcity, and CUplanet for the upcoming city builder game, Cities Unlimited- they're worth looking at if you like that sort of thing).

My avatar on most other sites is a Red Sox logo. It's cliche, I know, but the crowd on those sites is very international and the logo gives me an identity while on a site like this one with a crowd who lives or takes particular interest in the Boston area, a Red Sox avatar wouldn't be unique in any way.

Long story short-- I'll set one up when I find the right one. Also, None of the poll options really fits my situation, but this is a pretty open ended question so if you had every possible option it would be a rather lengthy list.

I've been planning on getting one, I just haven't gotten to it yet...and I also want to get an avatar that fits...I don't want a cliche picture of Boston but I do not know.

^ He is a handsome fellow, that grand-dad from Hyde Park. I'm amazed the height fetishists don't worship him like a god.

My other avatar on SSC is a pic of china which wouldn't be suitable for this forum. I didn't really spend time looking for an avatar for this forum, it's just not important to me since we don't need to "present" ourselves like in bigger, more global forums.

On most forums avatars are used as part of your identity within the community.

I think a lot of forumers here see this place more as an information exchange rather than a traditional online 'community'.

I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing though.

Now I'm curious to know on what grounds someone would be "philisophically against the use of avatars"

^Not sure. But I just uploaded an avatar for myself. It's the "Whalevane" at the top of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. I'm from the SouthCoast, so it's distinct and it fits.

I think it would be fun to meet other members. We could go on the Duck Boats. I have a bunch of duck calls and we can quack obnoxiously at the tourists.

btw- What software or method do people use to make avatars?

I know it's not the real way to do it but download the thumbnail image from google image search, or re-size my own photo in Paint. My current one is unedited from google images.

I guess based on what I've read on this board, being a 'BC guy' makes me a bit unique, so to go with my handle, I've picked up a related avatar.
