Developers Beacon Communities and Mount Vernon Co. announce plans to convert residential portions of the YW Boston building (nee YWCA) to affordable housing. 210 affordable units are planned. Other current tenants of the building (Lyric Stage, Snowden International School) will remain.

I'm glad they're not trying to level the historical structure, like is happening up and down Stuart Street (including next door to this). The BPDA is veering dangerously into 1960's territory with the amount and quality of buildings they're allowing to be demolished.

The City quietly allowed the creation of a new SRO with this, which is fantastic. If only we hadn't zoned them out in the 60s and 70s....they're a type of housing that was traditionally profitable to build even in expensive districts.

The Walsh administration has been quietly allowing this in a number of developments around the city (St. Francis House housing, for example). Particularly focused on our homeless population and extremely low AMI.

I love that they plan this as a "historically sympathetic preservation". This is a wonderful piece of architecture and a true gem. Bravo for doing the right thing.
