Arguably the least Gateway-ie of the Gateway Cities, Haverhill has a large geographic area that centers around the Merrimack River and a solid middle-class population. Home to about 64,000 people, Haverhill was a major shoe manufacturing hub. Today it has a well preserved healthy and mostly vibrant Downtown, although there are too many surface parking lots spread between its towering impressive mill buildings. Also, the city has not fully recovered from some short-sighted urban renewal projects that demolished significant parts of the Downtown. Haverhill does enjoy one of the best located commuter rail stations in the MBTA system, smack dab in the center of Downtown, and a riverside boardwalk was recently constructed connecting several redevelopment projects. These photos are focused on the Downtown area.
