Hingham Sidewalks

I appreciate that this might be a very niche question, but its something that has been bouncing around in the back of my head for almost two decades:

South of downtown Hingham, the sidewalks on main street are set back about 50 feet from the street, particularly south of high street and north of pleasant street. Why?

I figure this must have something to do with previous trends in development, like maybe something to do with keeping horses and street cars separate. But I’ve got no idea, and I’ve only seen this on this one street in Hingham.
