Chicago has a pretty decent, simple system. Pedestrian lights up when traffic is going with them, closes when its against them. Right on red only when there are no peds, or when you can honk loud enough to scare the bejesus out of them.

Isnt the US one of the only countries that allows right on red?

I think right on red should be the exception, not the norm.

And pedestrian lights should never say dont walk to allow for turning cars

As a resident of Allston-Brighton, Storrow Drive is a wonderfully convenient road and a beautiful drive. With the kind of traffic volumes listed in that link it would be hard to remove it. I'd accept certain calming measures, e.g. Memorial Drive, but a fly over-under for major intersections is a must.

^ It's funny that Rutherford Ave is the heaviest trafficked road that's not a limited access highway. And it's not even close! Although, I guess it makes sense, since you can get the 93, 1, and others from there.
