New Ideas for the Site

THIS: Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

is more clutter-some than this would be? Really?

Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 625" | 55 Stories

How is option 2 better (especially for archival/searching) than option 1?

The discussion we had to settle on this title format (which I'm assuming you still haven't read) settled on the location of the building (a frequent issue brought up in numerous threads) being more important than height. Besides, how many threads would be

Probably a common question, but is there any way to get it so we can upload images directly to the site? As is, there are the extra steps of uploading to Flickr or Photobucket etc. and linking.

Of course, sometimes having more images can be annoying (esp. when they're supersized ...)

Hosting the images locally on the site would up bandwidth and costs tenfold.

If you don't want to archive your images in an album or anything like that, I would recommond using http://imgur.com to upload pictures... it's pretty painless.

Maybe a page notation in the header as to where you can go back to look at the rendering?

Anyone think classifieds would be a cool idea here?

I imagine we all have some stuff we want to get rid of, maybe trade. We sort-of kind-of know each other (already better than craigslist), and possibly have similar taste being into design and all. Thoughts?

Thought you were going to mention job postings since many of us are in the construction and design of construction world.

I was wondering if possible for new projects, to add a post on the first page that includes all the general information, links, and renders of the project, similar to how it's done for 111 Federal Street (which is now outdated). That way, people don't need to go through pages looking for links or rendering.

I might do it for the Filene's Tower considering I'm the one that posted the original post.

Re: Cambridge Developments

I'm in favor of freezing this thread and starting individual Cambridge threads.

I'm all about the archBOSTON forum, but it needs some restructuring in my opinion. A suggestion could be:

Boston's Built Environment > "Cambridge Developments" (under Development Projects)

or

Instead of "Outside Of Boston Metro", maybe it could be "Other New England Cities/Development" with example below:

Other New England Cities/Development > Cambridge Developments > then individual project threads

This could work for other hotspots too (interest wise) like the Boston Metro (excluding Cambridge), Portland, Worcester, Lowell, New Bedford and Providence.

Re: Cambridge Developments

I like the idea of having:

  • Boston area's Built Environment
    • City of Boston
      • Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown
      • Boston Properties Office Tower | 888 Boylston Street | Back Bay
      • General Dorchester Developments
      • General Brighton Developments
      • etc.
    • Cambridge/Somerville/Watertown
    • North Shore
    • Merrimack Valley
    • MetroWest
    • etc.

I agree with big

Coleslaw -- you've merged all of:
1) Fort Point / Gillette
2) Seaport / Innovation
3) rest of South Boston
4) Fenway
5) Longwood Medical

into ETC.?

Similarly you merge All of Cambridge into Cambridge / Somerville / Watertown

That's not at all realistic

Just count the cranes in Cambridge & Somerville and compare to the original list

For that matter there are three very large projects in Waltham along Rt-128 -- two on Prospect hillside

Re: Cambridge Developments

No dude. Etc just meat I wasn't going I type out each individual neighborhood or each individual project, but they each still have their own thread. Same with the regions not listed. Also the regions other than Boston also have their own sub-threads. I thought that was clear.

heres an idea for the site.

We should hold an annual awards forum where members vote on their favorite and worst projects of the year. :p

I agree. And not just because the annual awards are "fun." We all know that people with real influence over development lurk on this forum. The awards are a direct and easy way to make our opinions heard.

Everyone talks about doing more advocacy through ArchBoston. Step #1: Bring back the awards.

Briv, if you are too busy to run them (which is understandable, you do a lot for this site already), please delegate it to someone else and give them all the necessary admin privileges. I am sure there are senior members who would happily volunteer to do this.

I second that as well. In fact I would also suggest that we retroactively set up a vote for 2013 as well.

Maybe one way to contain the scope and effort is to eliminate the extraneous categories and just do "Best New Development" (and maybe worst). And even though I'm new around here, I would be willing to help out with this as well.

Same. I'm definitely willing to help out in all aspects on here.

I don't know about eliminating any categories because there are only eight of them. I would actually like to propose adding two categories if we start doing the awards again, Best Urbanist Policy and Worst Urbanist Policy, to cover things like Late Night T Service or Removal of Gas Tax Indexing.

In order to make things smoother or less daunting, instead of limiting the scope of the awards maybe nominations could be limited for each member, especially for the Hall of Fame and Shame categories.

Also echoing that I would be willing to help out with anything.

Any chance Data can be an admin? He seems to be the most active member and is not an idiot.
