The Federal government is the applicant, as it still owns the site.

Re: the gas manufacturing plant (illuminating gas) that was located proximate to the site. A byproduct of illuminating gas plants is coal tar. This nearly 300 page report was prepared by a GSA contractor on the remediation of coal tar at the Volpe site. (Discovered when digging fence post holes for the on-site child care center.)

Not at all surprised -- Pictures from the 20's of Kendall made it look almost like the old Pittsburgh -- kinda dark by 3 PM Smoke belching from stacks all around
 
I really hope this looks better in person. It just seems like another big glass box to me.

Van -- by itself it would mostly be a big glass box

But when you put it into the context of that nook of Kendall Sq. -- it just fits -- offering just the right amount of color [mostly from reflected brick] and just the right amount of glassiness
 
"Kendall Inbound Headhouse MOA and possible action" is on the FMCB agenda for today. Hopefully some better renders than we've seen attached to the general building renders.

This is really handsome against the sky. The way the corners dematerialize is great and the subtle complexity of the fins is also interesting. I'd like to get over there and see what the ground level experience is.

The kink in the face when looked on from an angle allow the fins to do a bunch of different fade ins and out. Some angles it looks like all blue glass others it looks like solid red. Awesome effect.

I think for a big box, which was probably determined by use and the architect had little sway in, this is the best we could get and I am really happy with it actually. I could stare at this all day. I think it's a standout for recent architecture in the Boston area.
 
This building and the Kendall Square Gateway building (with the gradient tone facade) really command your attention as you drive in from the west. They "own" the Kendall Square skyline.
 
The Hodgepodge of different buildings and different facades shown in pictures 1 of each of Bee's posts show one of the reasons that the Boston\Cambridge area is a unique world class city in the states. Count me as one who wouldn't mind a few more tall buildings in the area(not mega talls) but only if they could be built into and on our old classic buildings.
 
The following Beeline photo of Main St in Kendall -- should be taken as Exhibit #1 in the response to the unfounded claim [oft repeated] that Kendall looks like a Suburban Office Park

Show me an office park that looks like the below image of the jumble and jostle of different building styles, ages and sizes along Main Street

Wonder if Boeing, with all the upheaval of the 737 Max, 777X, fees to reimburse airlines who had to ground their 737 Max's, and a new CEO if they will delay or pull back a bit on occupying this space (ahem, GE). I guess there is so much demand in the area it wouldn't matter.

Boeing does a ton of different stuff - GE's issues cut to the heart of the company. Boeing's issues are pretty contained in the commercial airliner business. I don't know what they plan to house in Cambridge, but I doubt it's airliner development...
