i had that exact same thought/curiosity about the first floor. i'll never understand those types of lazy-ass modifications. it's like the totally incongruous brickwork slapped on the somerville public library's doorways, presumably from when they upgraded entrances to be handicapped-accessible. you can't be bothered to put in just a TINY bit of effort to jibe with the rest of a historic structure of architectural merit? even a little bit?

from the city docs re: potential landmark designation back in 1983:
"The first floor originally featured large shop windows separated by piers covered with terra cotta and topped by molded Doric capitals, paneled blocks and brackets. The piers have been covered by modern brick sheathing and most of the windows have been encased. The terra cotta first floor entablature remains intact, as does the ornate detailing along the upper two stories."

yeah -- screw elegant terra cotta masonry and doric capitals and expansive windows! what a great alteration...

Took a trip back home to Southie yesterday to help my folks pack up at the end of the Street Festival. Brought the camera along as I took the family to the Franklin Park Zoo lights after, so I decided to get some photos in the festival...

My grandparents came from Ireland so I really appreciate all of these, especially the last one!

Just a crappy cell phone pic but there was a movie being filmed last night and Devonshire Street looked really cool. I think the movie is "Spirited" with Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell.

This has been all over Twitter and Reddit. It's a Christmas movie, or at least there is snow. AND IT TAKES PLACE IN NYC!!! I'm never going to be able to watch this without being taken out of the film every time I see Boston as NYC.

It takes place in NYC and Victorian London--and Boston's standing in for both. There might not be another city in the world that can do that.

Tonight had quite a unique sunset. It was pretty grey and drab out until golden hour, when a few clouds broke away to only shine on the skyline and nothing else. It turned everyone's heads and cracked a few smiles.

About 20 minutes prior:

Followed by some brief pink and purples, and then quickly back to gray.
